I am on the verge of ordering from DS. After a very bad experience with Cyberpower which resulted in 8 months of hell and finally a full refund, I have researched a ton of custom pc makers and DS seems to have the best rep and by far the best support.
I have spent hours going through the online configurator but I will still have a bunch of questions. My first question has to do with cases. I clicked on the "Custom Build" link on the homepage then selected "Custom Intel Ultra --> Customize it".
I looked the cases available. Names like DigitalStorm 350Si, 850Si, etc.
I clicked the link below these options to see the "Entire" lineup but only 5 cases show up (Extreme, Pro, etc.). I live in Colorado, and the dust here is well, not friendly for open air cases. I read on the forums that the PRO is better for dusty environments so I thought I would go with that. Trouble is, I do not understand what case option (350Si, 850Si, etc.) is the PRO. Can someone explain the differnent case models as they pertain to the 350Si, etc? I plan on getting a Quad core processor with the 780i MOBO and most likely 2X SLI 8800 GTS nvidia video cards. I am confused about cooling so my next question pertains to that. Basically Air or Liquid? While the loudness of the rig is not of GREAT concern, I don't want it to sound like a jet taking off either. If I go with air, the more fans the better and I understand that there are regular fans and then better fans? Then there's stage 2 and stage 3, etc. I am all for a cool PC so what are your suggestions and what is the best way to communicate with DS about custom orders, I would assume phone? Thank you in advanced....more questions to come.

You caught their site at a bad time really. They just updated their website (by just, i mean today). I found this site last night and was playing with the options, and came back today wondering what happened..haha. When they changed the lineup they also changed the cases. The computer i selected last night now has a $200 buck more expensive case with it that was part of the twister ultra, but is now called a 850si or whatever.
To answer your question shortly, the old twister pro case is now called the 750si case. Its not really pretty to look at, and i have concerns about the air flow, but that indeed is the twister pro case.

I got the Ultra and it is a big case, but well worth the extra $$$$. Expecially if you plan to upgrade. Plus it looks so cool.

id like to get the ultra which is now standard on the 850si (old pro)...but the extra 215 to the price kinda pushes it over my limit unfortually. I really hate the looks of the old pro (750si) case, but it looks like im pretty much stuck with it if i wanna get the hardware i want.

Isnt it true that you can have DS order any case you want? Of coarse you will have to pay for shipping to them. I found some kick butt cases I would pay extra for.

We can special order a case for you, or you can send us a case of your own. However, we will have to confirm that the case works with all of your selected hardware.

So if I understand correctly, the 850Si is the Pro case and the 959Si is the Ultra case?

The 750S is the Pro case and the 850S is the Ultra case.
The 950S is the Extreme case. |

If I may suggest.
The old Pro case (750) is not a bad case, but it's not my first pick for an overclocked quad and a high end SLi. You've listed a concern about running an open air case, so the best bet is going to be an Extreme (950) IMO. Looking at the components you would like to have installed, the best path is liquid cooling. If you are going to go with air cooling, just be advised that no matter how well the case promotes good air flow, any overclocking potential is going to be somewhat more limited than it would be on liquid cooling. The Extreme is still a decent case for this purpose, as the number of fans in a case is less important than how well those fans are placed. There is always the option to ask for something different. This extends to any portion of the build. If you plan on air cooling with the components you list, I would ask for high flow fans to be installed, and request a 120mm tower style CPU heat sink/fan combo. The increased case air flow and increased heat dissipation at the CPU will give you a higher level of performance than you could otherwise expect. |
