Might be building a custom rig for my school, only thing that boggles me is a case. The thing is, I don't go a school with non-tech savvy people, there are people who're as smart as everyone else on this forum, soooo, security is sorta a big thing for me, hehe. I can system password the entire thing, but physically, some cases are prone to theft, and I need a good, decent case equipped with locks to prevent the side doors from opening without physical authorization. I've seen a few that have locks, but are pointless locks, a few that are awesome cases, but with pointless locks, I need suggestions!
(No, I don't have time to pull a bit of DIY, unfortunately, even though I have some decent tools to work with) (Sorry about all the new topic posts, I just had a really freakin' awesome brainstorm today )Edited by ablahblah - 07 Jun 2010 at 6:05pm |

Kinda what you are thinking of?
remember to lock the BIOS also, I would be more worried about the ones that do know a little bit.. lol
I was always taught that locks stop only honest people. lol

Make the computer on one of those benchmark racks? Or just get a ugly looking case with no windows.

an open case would make it easier for people to steal/mess with the hardware.. the one I posted locked the side panel and the front panel.. not high quality locks.. but.. lol

I still don't understand why you're spending so much on a computer for your school xD

eh, have any other cases with five or more 5.25" bays? I want to stuff in at least 5 DVD-R burners. Lian-Li's I know come standard with locks, but some of them I really don't like, and other cases just look a lot more professional.
the BIOS, yep, that was gonna be my first step. after that I would slap on a HDD password in case someone tries to just steal the SSD. ![]() the reason why I'm spending so much is that, first, we have a crapload of outdated stuff to replace (I.E., they got this media rack 5 years ago. guess what it "features"? a PATA hard drive recorder ). second, I want this thing to record, edit, and produce a lot of quality video on DVDs, so that amps up some processing power. thirdly, I just want this thing to be downright fast, so that no one will complain about it. yeah, some idjits at our school get REALLY annoying and whiney when they blame technology itself when things don't go right, so I don't want that happening. partly just to make a statement of what non-dell systems in a school can do, lol.Edited by ablahblah - 07 Jun 2010 at 11:01pm |

Haha, I see what you mean, but you're just gonna donate this system to the school?

Something like this could be used on just about any case:
http://www.tufnut.com/product.aspx?part_no=RLS&subcategory_id=44 The cable covers the case screws so the case can't be opened. Then secure the cable to the table and you're set. |

You're welcome. I don't know exactly how much you're worried about theft, but depending on the level of concern, you may want to steer clear of a case with a side window. It'd be difficult to get most parts out of a broken side window but the RAM would come out fairly easily, the proc may be easy to get out depending on the heat sink and you may be able to get out expansion cards with a right-angle screwdriver.
