So I'm trying to changes what drive my "user" folder is on, the one containing my photos, music, etc. Currently it is on my little ssd and I don't want stuff going on there and taking up room.
When I try to transfer it to my other hdd, I get an error that there are files in the user folder being used by System. How can I move this over the whole folder without flipping it out? |

i havent gotten to play with this much but im guessing windows considers the user folder part of the default paths and wont let you edit them without a hassle.
i would leave the folders that were already there and move the content to your 2nd drive in new folders

Ok, well I don't want to upset Windows.
Is there anything that the system puts in the user folder automatically? My main concern is that it will be filling it up with stuff without me realizing it. 40gigs won't stretch too far |

nothing will get added to that directory unless you
1 - allow a download to be stored there(or have windows set not to ask for download paths)
2 - install a program/game that puts extra crap in there
so if you get everything out and set your default download path for everything to your desktop or somewhere where you check a lot, nothing will just show up there
some games will have like extra folders of junk or sometimes even your saved games that will default to a path like users/superecho, but you can usually modify this during the installation, so just keep a close eye on what path anything goes and youll be fine

Are you using Win 7? If so I'm not sure if you can easily change the location of the User director, but you CAN change the default directories for pretty much everything in the User director - things like the Desktop, My Documents, My Pictures, etc really easily.
Go into your user directory (C:\users\username). Right click the item you want to move Click on Properties Click on location Change the drive letter to whatever drive you want these things to go to. (eg e:\users\username\desktop) I've done this before and have never had an issue with things not working properly. |

hmm, can I ask a quick question then? suppose you had two systems, but sharing one data drive. could you setup both systems at different times so that both would recognize that data drive as the reference folder for desktop, my documents, etc., and have both systems thus running data natively off the data drive? of course, at different times, a physical drive can only be in one place at once.

These are all wonderful suggestions. I am finding that my space on the ssd is still running thin as everytime Windows or Photoshop updates, it eats up a little bit more.
Are there some things that can safely be deleted from the main drive? |

to my knowledge, unless you change this on your own windows will keep all of you update installers, i remove this with ccleaner, so consider using that
you can also do what jjjj up there is saying, and move your user directory to another drive to not waste space with that
you can also delete/disable windows backup/system restore, which takes up some space
check out blackvipers website for other windows fixes and things you can save space with
