It seems the cheapest DS has laptops for is $1500. Say I wanted to get a cheaper GPU, say the 950M, could I do that? Its not in the configurator. I want a new laptop, and I want it from DS but $1000 pricetag sounds better to me for a laptop.

I vaguely remember in the past DS was selling laptops for around $900-1000.
I wonder if I would be better off going to Newegg to meet my needs.

I'm not sure how DS handles special orders for laptops, but I think it's reasonable that they would charge an additional fee to install a non-listed component, so you'd likely remove a bit of the savings from the 950M due to that. Given the 500-600$ difference in price between your ideal and the DS laptops, I'm not sure you'd be able to make the kinds of changes to bring the price point down to the range you are looking at, since that range is a bit under DS' current line.
