Hi,
Sorry if this is the wrong location, but I didn't see anywhere else to post this. I recently reinstalled Star Wars Battlefront and the game locked up on me twice due to a CLOCK_WATCHING_TIMEOUT BSOD error. I've never experienced before, with any other game or software, and all my video/OS drivers and updates are all current. Back in December - April when I had the game on this PC before, the game never crashed, not even once. Any suggestions as to how to even start to diagnose this issue? Thanks to all who respond. Sorry you are having issues. It is frustrating. If it is a Steam game (don't play that one) you might want to try bpratt22's suggestion on General Discussion/New Member/Question. I tried it for some freezing and crashing issues and they were fixed.

Possible cause could be your oc, is this something you get all the time or only with this particular game?
this is a cpu error. If you can upload your dump file that would be great. Edited by DST4ME - 11 Sep 2016 at 2:57pm |

I would do a System Restore and then reinstall it. Also, even though you just did it recently, I would reinstall gpu drivers.
Check File Integrity in Steam like hoserator suggested. Run the game in Compatability mode. Also run it as Administrator in same as Compatability. Edited by bprat22 - 11 Sep 2016 at 3:26pm |

Thanks for responding Guys.
It was only limited to this game, never have seen the problem otherwise. The game itself is on Origin actually. After posting here, I did a live chat with EA last night were they had me do a "repair" on the game (equivalent to the Steam integrity check, I guess) and it ran perfectly after that. I'll keep an eye on it and report back with any updates. |

Well, I spoke too soon. Played it for the past couple of hours and poof....it did it again.
I used DDU to uninstall the old the video drivers. Should I have used something else? By the way, EA sent me this email of suggestions yesterday: 1. Check requirements. 2. For General performance problems, do configuration tweaks. Set up a graphic card gaming profile. http://help.ea.com/en/article/setting-up-a-graphics-card-gaming-profile/ 3. Change Compatibility Mode. 4. If you are able to play the game before, but it has now stopped working without you doing anything to the PC, perform a System Restore. -You should save any open files and close all programs. System Restore will restart your PC. -Use the following steps: 1. Open System Restore by clicking the Start button. 2. In the search box, type in System Restore & press ENTER or click Search. 3. In the list of results, click System Restore. If they are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, advise them to type the password or provide confirmation. 4. Instruct the customer to follow the steps in the wizard to choose a restore point & restore the computer. Note: It is advised that the player chooses the most recent restore point so as to limit the loss of data/progress they may incur. 5. Make sure you are running the latest version of Origin. 6. Try to have the game run the game in Window Mode. There are different ways to do it as follows: *Alt-Enter - This hot-key command will force window mode for most Windows applications. *Game Options - If the player is able to get to the option settings in the game itself, an option for Window Mode will usually be available here. *Launcher Shortcut - In the desktop shortcut for the game, insert a -w behind the path in the Target box. *Ini files - Most games have a config.ini file that contains the settings that the game is us using. This would allow the player to set Windows or Fullscreen mode with a trigger. 7. Check on Conflicts & Antivirus/Firewall with Origin. https://help.ea.com/en/article/programs-that-may-cause-conflicts-with-origin/ https://help.ea.com/en/article/how-can-my-anti-virus-software-interfere-with-a-game-installation/ 8. Clean registry, clear cache & temp files. http://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-use-ccleaner-to-fix-pc-issues/ 9. Update the computer. *Update the operating system. *Download & install the latest DirectX Redistributable & the customer DirectX for the game. *Download & install the latest version of the .NET Framework. *Download & install the latest updates to C++ *Clean install their graphics card drivers. *Check their dxdiag and update any other out-of-date drivers or services. *Update network drivers if new drivers exist. 10. Send us a screenshot of the DxDiag. 11. Repair/update game. http://help.ea.com/uk/article/i-cannot-load-my-game-from-origin-or-i-am-having-issues-in-game/ 12. Unplug all USB devices (aside from mouse and keyboard). 13. Disable User Account Control. 14. Disable Origin Overlay. http://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-use-origin-in-game/ 15. Run game in Admin Mode. http://help.ea.com/uk/article/how-do-i-run-a-program-or-a-game-as-an-administrator/ 16. Disable the Origin Cloud save if applicable. *Login to Origin, *Select the Origin menu option & select Application Settings. *Uncheck Enable cloud storage for all supported games under General tab, then click Done. *Logout of Origin. *Delete save data for the game in question. Note: Game save data is often located in the Documents folder or within Documents\My Games. *Login to Origin & launch the game in question. *Re-enable cloud storage & launch the game in question. *Select Use Local Data when prompted with Cloud Save Conflict. Note: This should replace the corrupt cloud data with good local data. 17. Create new test Admin Account. http://help.ea.com/uk/article/how-to-create-a-new-admin-account/ 18. Perform clean boot. As I mentioned the error is a cpu error. However since it is only with this game then the problem is most likely with the game.
I would first play another game or stress the cpu to see if I get this error again, if so then the problem might be with your cpu or oc. If after stress test you don't get this error or any other errors then the problem is with this game. bp and the tech have some good stuff for you to try but if its your cpu then those are waste of your time, which is why I would check and see if its my cpu/oc or the game via cpu stress test first, in the meantime it didn't hurt to try what bp said either ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 12 Sep 2016 at 9:27am |

A couple of weeks ago, I played Deus Ex: Mankind Divided without any crashes, errors, etc at all. I also agree that it's probably the Star Wars game.
When you say "stress test", is there a program or something that you can recommend for that? |

I'm not allowed to mention the ones I like to use here, so try realbench I guess. My hands are tied on this forum unfortunately.
try the stress test with 8GB of ram if you have 16GB total. Edited by DST4ME - 12 Sep 2016 at 10:10am |

Thanks.
It passed the Benchmark with no problem. However, it crashed during the Stress test. This time it said the error was a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. The file/app that caused the crash was WppRecorder.Sys OK...now what? |

Check your ram with Memtest 86+ . The site will have you setup a bootable USB drive for example. With some systems, if you use a USB, the USB needs to be plugged in to set it in Bios boot order if needed.

locate your minidump folder under windows, then load your last dump file here, you have to change the extension from dmp to zip by renaming it, and then just upload it here.

There's nothing there. Would CC Cleaner have wiped that clean by chance?
EDIT 1 - My system was dumping it to the main Windows folder. There is a file there named MEMORY.DMP. Is that the correct file? The Minidump folder is still empty, however. EDIT 2 - Neither Memtest86 nor Memtest86+ would work with my USB stick (both gave me errors when trying to install/format it). However, I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool and it found no errors, if that makes any difference. EDIT 3 - Uninstalled video drivers with DDU. Reinstalled NVidia drivers 372.70 with clean install option, only installed Driver and PhysX (all other options not installed). Edited by fjk1138 - 13 Sep 2016 at 7:06pm |

OK good with edit#3.
forget about ram for now, we will circle back to it. What is the date for your memory.dmp file? if you have ccleaner set to erase dump files then yes it would delete them. Edited by DST4ME - 14 Sep 2016 at 10:04am |

Dump file is from yesterday. Do you want it? Looks like CC Cleaner was getting rid of Windows error dumps. I've unchecked that and will play the game again to see if that happens. Edited by fjk1138 - 14 Sep 2016 at 10:09am |

Actually DST4ME is completely right. Clock Watchdog Timeout relates to your CPU specifically.
The majority of the time, this is the cause of an OC becoming unable. In case you didn't know, just because your OC is stable today, because of hardware degradation over time, your motherboard or just your CPU can lose it's stability. This error can also point other things, such as memory, but they are all still originated through the CPU. I've seen first hand this blue screen pop up multiple times, sometimes when it's not even under load, just playing youtube videos. Then it'll disappear for two weeks, get you feeling all safe, then bam. If this error pops back up any time soon, we need to start looking at what's going on with the CPU. Is it overclocked and if so, do you know how high and with what voltage? Also, what motherboard do you have? |

After typing all of that, I see you guys talked about memory too. That's one of the things I was pointing out that could cause the error, but it would still most likely be coming from the IMC in the CPU.

IF it happens again I would drop the oc as meller mentioned first and see if it goes away, if it does then it could be the oc, try lowering a bit and see if that helps.
Basically if you keep getting the error without oc or lower oc then I would check out your ram as meller suggested. although I'm hopping you will not see it again, it could still be that app, if that is the only place you are getting it. |

Well things were going well for a while, and then as mentioned above....bang.
The game just locked up on me right now after playing for about an hour. Oddly enough it locked up in the menu screens and not during all the action. I didn't get an error message or anything, it just froze. It's definitely isolated to this game, I have no other issues at all with any other games or programs. My PC has an i5 6600K 3.5GHz OC to 4.4GHz. The motherboard is ASUS/GIGABYTE Intel Z170 Chipset. To reduce the overclock amount, I would assume that I have to hit one of the F keys on initial boot and adjust settings there, correct? Also, by what amount do you recommend reducing the OC by? Thanks Guys for all the continued help and follow up. Edited by fjk1138 - 18 Sep 2016 at 11:10am |

IF the error is not happening during any other game and just this one then the problem should be with the game, if that is the case you dont touch your pc since the problem is with the app.
To lower oc you need to go to bios and change vcore/clock, but for testing purpose you just save your oc profile in the bios, and then remove oc, once oc is removed you test the pc with the game to see if you still get problems. If its the game then you should get the problem again. Just to be clear the game froze but you didn't get the CLOCK_WATCHING_TIMEOUT BSOD error right? |

Are you running webroots as AV or anything? please say no.
Also please either come here for help or EA otherwise its gonna get very frustrating real quick, sine both side is gonna ask you to do things and some may have conflicts or throw results off. Your dump file is giving us the CLOCK_WATCHDOG error again, which is probably cpu oc. but I like to try something before we lower/remove oc. Edited by DST4ME - 21 Sep 2016 at 4:52pm |

I doubt EA will respond, but I figured I would at least throw it out on the forums there to see if anyone else has the issue. So far, no. I'll be coming here for the serious help. ![]() Edited by fjk1138 - 21 Sep 2016 at 5:19pm |

You have been lucky.
If you go back to 2009 you will see me recommend spysweeper by webroots as a great anti spyware, but that was only spysweeper and not the av which came out later, they sold the company and it went to crap and so did spysweeper and their reputation. the are one of the worst anti viruses out there. Please uninstall it and use eset and in that link there is link on how to set up the settings, please do so. eset home secturity has a full 30 day trial, it will help us with my test and if you don't like it for some reason you can go to something different something not webroots. Have a look here and get eset if you have any questions let me know. since your av is running in the background all your apps that crashed have it in common so we need to remove it and see if the problem goes away or if it is infact the oc. OK, I've done the following:
1. Uninstalled Webroot AV 2. Installed ESET AV and did a full scan - no issues found 3. Played Star Wars BF for almost 1.5 hours on full Ultra game settings. No crashes thus far. Also noticed that the PC does not seem to be working as hard (ie, the fans run but they are not running at a very high level as they were before). Will play some more and report back results. |
