Last week my X17 imploded. As I was playing GW2 the 680M died leading to the blue screen of death, which really sucked
Anyways, to the purpose of this thread. After using my X17 with its SSD going back to my M17 with its HHD kind of sucks
All of this time waiting for the M17 to boot and load up programs is driving me crazy, so when I got an email from Tigerdirect about a great deal on SSD's I bought one. Now that it is here I have been trying to find a program to copy the HHD in the M17 onto the new SSD so I can do a swap.
Does anyone have any insight or advice as to which programs work best? I have read that they can be bought to include the connector to plug the SSD into the computer via the USB, copy the drive, turn off the laptop, and then switch out the drives.
Thank you in advance

Hi dflyn003,
Cloning usually is done on a machine that has both the SSD and the HDD installed. I don't know anything about your M17 but I assume you can only have one drive installed. If that is true you might do this: 1. Copy what ever files you want to keep to a memory stick. 2. Remove the HDD and install the SSD 3. Load Windows to the SSD from the windows disk. 4. After Windows is working load the saved files from the memory sticks to the SDD. This is just a guess on my part and someone with more knowledge of laptops may have a better idea. If you use the Cloud you might be able to store your HDD info there and then down load after you load Windows on your SSD. Frank |

External SATA hard drive docks have become somewhat inexpensive and will do exactly what you are looking for. I use one myself, for backups and data storage. If your laptop doesn't have an eSATA port, make sure you get a dock that has USB support.
As for the software, there are many free and commercial packages out there that will do what you want. A simple cloning can be done by most of them. Clonezilla and Acronis are two examples. |

Generally, I use Macrium Reflect, although I would also recommend doing it the way FrankW said.

Alex,
While the situation is a bit disappointing I realize that sometimes things just happen. The laptop should be with your FedEx shipment today (been tracking it like a hawk on a squirrel). I also spoke to one of the IRM guys here on base and he recommended Vision Tek universal SSD cloning kit. I was concerned about the performance in just cloning the HHD and not getting optimal SSD performance out of the M17, but have been told by the IRM tech that the Vision Tek program works great and that he has used it in a couple of his rigs at home with great success. oh, and when my DS rig got here I set my wife up with my M17 and now that she is back to her Compaq 15.6 she isn't too pleased so anything that can be done to speed up the process will be greatly appreciated

Alex,
FedEx has the laptop as being delivered yesterday. Can you please confirm this? and will I be getting any kind of update as to the status of my laptop while it's in DS hands? also will I be updated as to exactly what happened to the video card?

It would be difficult to confirm it so early. You will receive updates via email. If it's a major repair that requires a motherboard and such, we may have to send it to a Clevo repair facility to get replaced.
I recommend emailing: [email protected] on Friday for a status check. |

Alex,
I sent an email to management@ digitalstormonline.com last night asking for an update.Hopefully I will hear from them soon.
I am pretty sure that the only issue is the 680M went belly up. I was gaming when all of the sudden the blue screen of death. Afterwards the computer would boot up, sound off a bunch of annoying beeps and then turn itself off... Edited by dflyn003 - 14 Sep 2012 at 8:54am |

wow, UPS delivered the repaired laptop yesterday, that was amazingly fast...
also it was the motherboard that went out not the video card
I have also noticed that Nvidia has an updated driver for the 680M but haven't downloaded it yet, but should be able to later today after work
Thank you Alex

Hi dflyn003,
Good news on getting your computer back. I would use the computer and make sure it is working before changing drivers. Play a game or two to see if the computer is working OK. If everything is fine, establish a restore point and then download new drivers. Frank Edited by FrankW - 19 Sep 2012 at 2:48pm |

Why don’t you go to computer repair center, a computer technician will easily
resolve this problem ? |
