Please bear with me as I am not a professional and use my computer only to play games and work.

Bought a computer from DS approx 2years ago. For about 2-3 days the computer has not been booting properly and I have to boot and reboot a couple of times to get it to work. My clock seems to be wrong everytime like it was reset and the computer will freeze up on occasion (That has not happened to me but my wife). From what I have read online (very extensive research, haha) it looks like it could be a problem with the CMOS battery. A few questions:

1. Is the CMOS battery as easy to change as my "research" indicates?
2. I had the computer overclocked when I bought it. If i change the battery will the overclocking settings be restored to default.
3. To change the CMOS battery do I need to de static. I heard that if your anywhere near the motherboard that you need to do that to keep from frying it.

Lastly, does this seem like a CMOS battery issue?

Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. I would love to avoid any expensive trips to a computer repair center.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Hi DavidLibert.   Sorry to hear of the problems.

On most motherboards the cmos battery is a simple replace, much like a watch battery.  It's a round battery clipped to the board .  Do observe anti-static precautions, like a wrist strap version or at least constantly touching the metal of the case.

If you change the battery all overclocking is lost and it will go to defaults in Bios. A call to DS will get help in rsetting oc'ing.  I would say go into Bios and record all the settings before changing, but I'll bet they're already defaulted, including drive boot order.

If you have a multi-meter it can be checked once removed.  Most are 3 VDC.  A reading from + to - on labeled sides should be 3.  If 2.5 or lower it's going dead and will give problems.  Just easier to replace  and it does sound like the problem.

A sign of cmos flaking out is cmos battery failure or checksum messages.  Also, are you losing the pc time and date in lower right corner of display?  I think you said you were.  Are program icons disappearing?

Good Luck.

Thank you for your quick response. Yes I am losing the PC time in the bottom right corner. If you are referring the program Icons in the bottom right as well, those are disappearing.

Just simply touching the metal case is enough for anti-static?

Ideally, an anti-static wist strap.   But, once you open the case after power off and get situated, no walking around on rugs, etc, touching the bare metal case regularly should be OK.

If your drinking coffee or a wine, keep it away from pc LOL

The wrist straps are cheap and really are a good thing to have for anything inside a pc.

Seemed to have worked. I still need to call DS and have them walk me through the overclocking. I did have a little problem starting it up today though. It seemed to want to freeze up on me for some reason. Though the time and Icons are all back in working order. Thank you again for your help with this issue.
