http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=183247 My first post here: looking to configure a gaming machine for approx $2000. Would be used mostly for gaming and some photoshop. I want to play Crysis (current computer has a seizure when I try to play this), COD4, other 1st person shooters. Picked the GTX260 after reading many reviews, but also considering the Radeon 4870 and 9800GTX. I've never configured a boutique computer and the multiple choices are staggering. Any advice appreciated. Anne

I did decrease the harddrive size to keep it below $2200, because a second hard drive is an easy future upgrade if you need the space.
I'm new here, but have been trolling for awhile, and do plan to buy a similar system, with a similar budget, in about 6 months.

Anne,
Welcome to the fold, you will find most of us a personable bunch, with a few rather radical exceptions ![]() In any case you did a pretty nice job for a first shot, taking your request I put together the following builds. Build 1: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=183308 In this build I changed a few things, first I dropped video card overclock, that is something that you can easily do with EVGA Precision yourself. I added memory overclock which is a good deal, and upped the cooling as you wanted the overclock. This build I stuck with the dual core, it will not be a spry in photoshop tasks as this second build. Build 2: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=183313 The second build I just upped the processor to a Quad Core 9450, a great processor with significantly more horsepower and a good amount of overclock headroom in most cases. This processor will help with photoshop and other processer/calculation intensive tasks. Hope this helps. Dave ![]() Edited by Kliebor2 - 15 Sep 2008 at 1:02pm |

here $2257 -->http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=183319
I gave you 2 HD. I believe it's never a bad thing to have extra room, you never know what you will use it for but better safe than sorry. I did not specify water cooling. It's not that I think it's bad, but yo are on a budget and spending $250 to chill the CPU seems like a lot. I'm no expert but unless you raise the price you want to pay I would cut that out otherwise you skimp somewhere else. Also, if I was spending an extra $250 I'd look at getting a 300GB Velociraptor before the water cool. I mean who know what number you will get with your over clock but the VR hard drive you will get twice the speed every time you use it. I see many people go crazy about over clocking which is well and good but there is more than a computer clock-speed and the HD is a real performance bottleneck (IMO). Good luck, there is no wrong answer just our opinions there is more than one way to skin a cat. BTW, I can not fit a Velociraptor in your budget either, something's gotta give. I have the same problem with first person shooters... I have epilepsy... hehe. I do have epilepsy but FPS don't really give me seizures. LOL!Seriously, I would try to go with a quad core for your needs. Crysis is one game that makes use of quad cores and it will help with photoshop work. Although the HD 4870 looks like a good card, you don't have the ability to upgrade via crossfireX with the mobo. SLI is an option with that mobo however. If you can stretch your budget, even if it means waiting a bit, I'd go with Dave's second choice over a dual core. Just saw Rai's recommendation. Good and solid. Stage 3 air cooling with an OC will work fine too. He makes a good point for the HDD. Regarding shopping around different boutique pc makers, you will find that the warranty coverage is much more limited by others. (Unless you pay a couple hundred more). I've gone with Alienware and Falcon NW in the past, and like DSO the best. Alienware customer service is poor. Falcon NW is way overpriced. DSO stands behind their product and offer good value. ![]() Cat Edited by widdlecat - 15 Sep 2008 at 1:51pm |

here you go $2367
if you can stretch your system to 2300 then you can have a system you can has liquid cooling, that is most quite/stable and most speed and much better for oc. drop the liquid cooling and go with stage3 here you go $2197 |

Lots of good suggestions. I had thought about quad core to sort of "future proof" my new computer but was told there isn't much software out there that can utilize all that horsepower (at least not yet). I'm going to seriously consider it though. I was also looking at KC-Computers and Maingear. I'm leaning towards Digital storm as they have a great rating at resellerratings.com. I've been trolling all the different forums to see what everyone thinks about the different brands and their experiences, especially with tech support and reliability. Thanks for all the great suggestions. Anne

Maingear is a waste of money.
not enough choices, and same parts more money. I looked at them extensively before I came here and they are crap. you will not find a better PC maker as far as quality and price goes, I've tried
I have single core and dual core, they can't do what a quad core can do. Many people that don't understand how things work, say that quad core is not being utilized however app need more CPU now in days to run, its not a matter of apps build for quad core its a matter of are you gonna use your CPU or not and with the apps theses day and future. its a huge mistake not to go with quad core. If what you were told is correct, then how is everybody utilizing all their cores? you want to multi task? what to run some games? you think Crysis has no use for quad core?
not sure who you are talking to, but most of us here are customers and don't work for DS, so we know what we are talking about and I for one am not wasting my money on something that won't be used, and we are all telling you quad core is the way to go.
Now I just told you what I would wish somebody would tell me if I was in your shoes, but at the end of the day its your choice.
