Okay - I am ready to pull the trigger but wanted to get some forum feedback on a few things before I do. I have appreciated all the information I have found here so thanks in advance for the feedback. My build is below... here are my questions:
#1 The salesperson told me today she reccommended the 920 chip over the 940 as they were able to overclock it higher than the 940. She stated that they typically get 3.4 to 3.8 on the 920 with it leaning to the high end and they only get 3.2 to 3.3 on the 940. At a savings of over $300 bucks this sounds like a slam dunk choice. Any feedback on this?
#2 Power supply - she suggested the 1000w PC Power and Cooling over the Silverstone that I chose but from what I read online the PC Power and Cooling is much louder. I am way into quiet so I want to stick with the Sileverstone. Any feedback?
#3 I am thinking about sticking with XP until the new version of windows comes out as some of buddies are still having problems with Vista. Would love some input on your experiences on this also.
A couple of quick other notes. I have some points built up on a credit card that I am going to use to add a sound card so I left motherboard audio on here although I hear on-board audio is pretty cool now-a-days. I will also add a "bulk" drive down the road when/if I need it. She suggested a 1TB Western Digital but from what I read on the fiorums I should stick with a raptor exsecially since my current system has raptors in Raid config. I picked this case because I think it will be the quitest. Any feedback on any level is appreciated. Thanks again.

Definitely go with the 920, DS does the overclocking for you and it is under warranty for 3 years. The silverstone is quieter and should work just fine. As for XP, I have Vista and I never have a problem with it, I guess it will depend on what you will use the PC for, are you a gamer or into multimedia?
A friend of mine has XP 64bit and he always has problems with the blue screen of death for multiple reasons. You are getting 6gb of ram so will need to get a 64bit operating software to be able to use it all, go with vista or get dual boot and have both. Good Luck |

I got a dual boot system XP 32bit/Vista 64bit that way I can play DX 10 on the Vista and for other things like old games (I still play Grim Fandango) on the XP.

I got dual boot XP/Vista-64 I can tell you I hardly ever use XP any more. Vista 64-bit is a pretty solid OS. The problems your friends have are more likely due to drivers or hardware than Vista. I create and edit video on this machine and use it to game. Of course I encounter occasional problems and crashes, but that happens with any system that you tweak and tax. Whether it's a new driver that was released and installed before it was ready, a bad web page or just a random Windows whim....these things happen. They will happen with XP too.
Oh yeah. I do still boot into XP on occasion to run some OLD games that Vista won't play nice with. e06028 is correct though. If you are putting in 6GB of RAM, you're wasting your money unless you also put in Vista-64. XP-64 will only cause you headaches. |

If you choose xp then you will only use total of 4Gb out of your 8GB total ram.
to use all of your 8GB of ram you have to go vista 64bit, what problems are your friends having? maybe they just don't know their way around, most people here with vista 64bit are very happy with it. when you OC a 920 or 940 you can use faster ram then 1066MHz which is what intel supports. PC Power and Cooling is a better PSU. we have seen the 920 OC to 3.2 and we have seen it OC to 3.8, DS does not guarantee any OC speeds ahead of time, so you need to take that into consideration but the 920 has earned everybody's respect, it does OC very well even on air. your build looks great, I would go with 6GB of 1333MHz ram since you will never notice the difference between 1333 and 1600MHz, and I would go with vista 64bit so that you can use all of your system's resources. |

Thanks for the responses! Regarding the PSU - I understand that the PC Power and Cooling may be a better unit but is it substantially louder? And just what exactly makes it a better unit?
And to answer a previous question... I use my PC for business and pleasure but am building it with these components to "get my game on"! I am an avid gamer. Edited by angler - 26 Feb 2009 at 12:50am |

Switching gears slightly... any reason why the Corsair 750W wouldn't be a good choice? I can see myself adding another GTX 295 down the road and another hard drive or two. The 750W should be plenty of power correct? Was just reading some of the reviews on this product and it has me intrigued. |

nope lol the 750w would crap out with 2 295's
2 x295 is like having four cards in a system youd need 1000+ the build looks good as it is |
