    Posted: 21 Jul 2011 at 2:00pm

First of all, I apologize for another one of these topics. However, I definitely could use the advice/help.I am in the market to replace a Dell Latitude D830 laptop. The primary use of this desktop will be for work: Remote Desktop (RDC), Microsoft application development (.NET), web surfing, video streaming and other typical home uses (pictures, MP3, etc). However, I do also enjoy the occasional games and I would estimate the usage would be around 10 - 20% for games. However, I am not what I would consider a hardcore gamer and I never plan to be. This is just a guess since the laptop was completely inadequate, even connected to a docking station.

I will not need any peripherals.I’m trying to keep the cost as low as possible.I would say a $1200 max, although I would be happy to have it be even lower if what I have listed below is overkill for what I need. So, if there is anywhere where I could cut costs further, please let me know.More importantly, if you see potential problems for the uses I have described, that would be great to know.

The first configuration I’m looking at comes with a price of $1184.The specs are:

  • 700w power supply
  • Asus P8P67 LE Intel P67 based chipset, ATX motherboard
  • Intel i5-2500k processor, quad 3.30ghz, overclocked to 4.0ghz
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 7Pro Rev2 Heatsink, ultra quiet fan, copper heat pipes
  • 8gb DDR3-1333MHz (4 x 2048mb)
  • 768MB EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 video card
  • Onboard, integrated sound
  • 1TB 7200 rpm, 32MB cache
  • 20x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Burner with LightScribe Labeling Technology
  • Integrated 10/100/1000MBps Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter
  • 802.11n PCI WiFi Adapter
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

The second configuration has a price of $1201.The specs are:

  • 750w power supply
  • ASUS Sabertooth P67 (Intel P67 Chipset)
  • Intel i5-2500k processor, quad 3.30ghz, overclocked up to 3.9ghz
  • Scythe Katana 3 CPU cooler
  • 8GB DDR3-1600MHz (4 x 2048mb)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 1GB video card
  • Onboard, integrated sound
  • 1TB 7200 rpm, 32MB cache
  • 24x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Burner with LightScribe Labeling Technology
  • Integrated 10/100/1000MBps Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Thanks in advance for your thoughts/help.It is greatly appreciated.

Are you building that yourself or trying to order it here?

I am not building myself.  One is a custom build here, another is a build somewhere else.

Well listen, you can't compare build from here to some place else.

it they were all the same, I would not give over $10,000 my good earned money to DS and not somebody who was cheaper.

first you got great customer service here, other places you are pretty much sh*t out of luck.

then you got the parts, on your first build you got a 700w power supply, but I can't tell anything from that about the psu, is it a good one, a crappy one, I don't know, here I know what psu is what and which I recommend, and which I don't. The cpu cooler you listed are inferior to the a70 and noctua that they have here, the mobo is better in the config from here.

You have listed a lot of parts like the psu/hdd/ram with general description, but they are not all the same, make and model on a few things can mean a big difference, the case is not even listed, that is a pretty big deal.

In short I can't comment on your first build since without knowing the parts, I would pretty much be talking out of my arse, and bs info does you no good.

on your ds build here, if you can give me a ticket number for it so I can look at the whole config, that would be great.

if you want to list the make and model from teh config from teh other place I can tell you how crapy they are, I can't even believe they are offering you 1333MHz ram these days with these oc levels.

Thanks for your time and help DST4ME.  I completely understand about the differences in manufactures/products/companies.  Obviously DS is an extremely well respected company with a great product.  I might as well let you know the other company I am looking at is Velocity Micro.

The ticket # for the build here is 578237.

Velocity Micro is ok but I'm no big fan, and I don't like most of their parts to be honest.

Alex does not like us talking about other companies in a bad light, so I will stop commenting on that company and config.

this pc is lot more powerful then the 2 you listed and has proper cpu cooling, tho the 520 gpu is not very powerful at all.

I rather have a hx psu in there, a ssd, but budget does not allow us to do that.

You get another $50 off the price I listed with the current promo.

now I want you to look at the prebuilds DS has that are called ode, there is an ode 0,1,2,3,4, I want you to look at ode 0, its price is right up your ally, and tho I'm not crazy about the psu in it, everything else is better then what me and you have configed:

ode 0 Ticket Number: 578358

check it out and let me know what you think.

Thanks again.  I completely understand about feeling like your company is the best and I also felt awkward even mentioning a competitor. Besides, I've never heard anything bad about DS and it would be more convenient since I live in San Diego (although I get to pay for sales tax also Scared).

The ODE 0 looks really good.  Seems to have a better video card than what you listed.  The major difference is that the ODE0 does not support SLI (not an issue for me) and it has a smaller power supply.  Based on my suspected useage, I do not believe it will be a problem at all.

Will this setup work well for everything else I listed I would be using the computer for, which will be 80% of its useage?  The primary use of this desktop will be for work: Remote Desktop (RDC), Microsoft application development (.NET), web surfing, video streaming and other typical home uses (pictures, MP3, etc).

Also, what is teh shipping cost and what is the $50 promo you referred to?

Finally, if I decide to purchase, should I contact you directly?  I want to make sure you get the credit/commission if that applies.

Ok well I don't work for DS, I'm just a customer like you.

So you are not talking about my company (I have my own but its not this one, lol).

since I'm a customer I have no conflict of interest, so when I tell you I think DS is the best, its not because I'm an employee and that is what I have to say, its because I did my homework and based on customer service, parts, workmanship, I believe DS to be the best place to spend your money, which is why I gave them mine for the terminator you see in my sig.

for your price range we are kinda lock down as to what we can get, for example I like to give you the 2600K but in your budget thats not gonna happen.

as far as going sli, you are not gonna need it, nor would it make sense to go sli 520 anyways.

the config you posted from micor can't do sli either, nor the mobo or psu can do sli 460.

shipping I think is like around $70 or so I don't remember to be honest.

the $50 is off that price range $1000 to $1500, its a promo, the higher the price the more get off but it does not apply to ode.

when you are ready to order just call them or email them.

Ah, with all the quick help and advice I just assumed you were a DS employee Cool.  Oh well, you know what they say about assumptions.  That being said, you basically have me sold.

I completely agree about not needing SLI.  My only remaining question is regarding my other (primary) use of a computer.  Will I experience any problems on this setup?

DST is not an employee of DS. He is a knowledgeable customer. I also looked at Velocity Micro but stopped shopping around after I found DS.  You will get excellent advice here from DST and some of the other "old timers".

I don't know if ht makes a big difference in .net, but I don't see what problems you could have.

as long as the 8GB of ram is for your work you should be fine.

add a intel 320 ssd to the system when you can.

We should have a big notice on DST4ME's name saying he isn't an employee, but, a very passionate Digital Storm customer.

Alex, I agree that DST4ME needs something added to their signature.  Besides, they should also be receiving a commission check as wellCool.  They convinced me to get the ODE Level 1 (the $1199 version) and did an excellent job of selling DS as well, not that it was needed.  I just placed my order this morning.
