Topic: Computer Freeze/Pixelation While Gaming Posted: 14 May 2020 at 3:16am |
Specs:
Make and Model = Digital Storm laptop (I don't know the exact one) CPU = Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700k CPU @ 4.00GHz GPU = NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Motherboard = EUROCOM Sky X4E2 OS = Windows 10 Every once in a while my screen explodes into square clumps of blue pixels and freezes when I'm gaming (except in one instance I'll explain later). I'm forced to manually restart my computer. It has mainly happened when playing a game I just got two days ago called Warhammer Vermintide 2. First time while loading into the lobby area of the game. Second while opening the character select in the game. Thirdly while trying to exit the game. Fourthly while loading into the lobby area again. It has happened two other times outside of that game. Once while opening steam, and another time while opening a chest in a game called Examina (in Examina however it covered my screen in the square clumps of pixels for only a brief moment and then the game returned to normal.) It seems to happen mainly when my computer has to process something, like a new area getting loaded in or trying to close the game. To troubleshoot I've tried to update my drivers, lower the settings on Vermintide 2 (before it affected things outside of that game), and have used the sfc /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth commands Nothing has worked thus far, and I'm afraid of playing my other games do to the freezing. |

One game title is not a valid indicator of a hardware issue since that game may not be optimized for the hardware you have. What you describe seems related to the GPU (pixelation and artifacting).
I found this reddit post. There may be plenty of similar ones. Keep in mind this may be a game specific issue (good news that it wouldn't be your computer): https://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/comments/732x8s/warhammer_ii_graphical_glitches_render_game/ Edited by GrandesBollas - 14 May 2020 at 4:01am |

Thank you for your reply :D I've tried verifying the cache for both games, and the problem persists. That is a post from Total War: Warhammer 2, which is a different game from Warhammer Vermintide 2. I don't think it's game only. Like I said in my post it happened once when opening Steam (which is an app that acts as a games library). And now, on Exanima for a second time. Until two days ago I never had any issues like this on Steam or on Exanima. (I will probably try a few more games to see if it persists onto those as well) It might be a GPU issue. Can stuff like this happen on new GPUs? The one I have I got not even two months ago. Edited by GreenLegMan - 14 May 2020 at 4:25am |

Update: Opening a chest on Exanima two caused the pixelations. Except this time they were full blown squares, and all of the shadow effects ingame turned into red pixels. Audio played on repeat and then the computer crashed.

That gpu might be on its last leg. Call DS you have lifetime support.

Yep, unfortunately even brand new electronics can go down suddenly. Manufacture is not always perfect. The good news is the warranty so you can get a new one sent. If it's a known fixable thing, DS techs will help you. It's typical of computer parts if they don't fail in the first year they will last a LOT longer. All the best.

While I wait for support to get back to me, it got worse. I can't even boot the computer correctly anymore. The windows loading icon is surrounding by the pixelated glitchiness.

Still can't play games without the pixelation. Tried playing Halo: MCC and it did it when I was in the menus to start a campaign.

You might try re-seating the GPU. Shut down; unplug; press and hold the start button a few seconds to discharge capacitors. Open the case, ground yourself on the case metal. Unscrew the GPU where it's fastened at the back of your case and gently rock it in it's PCIe slot to see if it just might be a little insecure. Replace the screw, and fire back up. Best of luck.

I would send an image but the file size is too big and I can't send an image link due to it being counted as 'spam'.

helpful tip... upload your file to an image hosting site like imgur.com and then post the link here.

I would still try getting some canned air and see if I can blow out any dust when it is open since that can cause overheating .

Back off re-seating the GPU. My advice was for a desktop. It's very unlikely parts in a laptop would come loose in shipping as they are packed in there so tightly. Sure, try the canned air idea.
