I am truely amazed.
I ordered before memorial day, got a good system and watch the forums and the world at large and find it amazing that virtually all the hardware in my box is considered a virtual paperweight by many systems reviewers already. I mean I use my system and it flies, the speed and power at virtually everything I do blows me and anyone I show the box too away, yet I get the impression from the web, system reviewers and even some of the regular posters here that my entire hardware selection is so yesterdays news that it barely warrants mention anymore. It just seems so odd to have a system less than a month old and already feel like upgrading is just around the corner, sometimes I hate the technology curve. Dave |

As I said I am amazed by it, I just thought I would throw out my observations and see what others thought.
The speed at which technology seems to be advancing is staggering and I was actually quite curious what others who ordered around about the time I did thought about the new generation hardware, what their plans were around possible update, it is a rather open ended question I know, but one that has me very curious because it effects all of us, wether you ordered 3 months ago, or 3 days ago, the rate of advancement in the industry has you fairly well obsolete by the time you have installed your 5th game on your hard drive. I mean the 9800GTX, the flagship card I chose was only released in March 2008, just under 4 months ago... and poof, now all I see is the reviewers screaming 280 GO BABY!!! I guess I am still a little more old school, having been playing with computers since 1980 when I got my first home PC, a Commodore Vic-20... so I have been bopping around the tech biz for a while and it just seems to be that what is considered hot or not lasts only a few weeks before something else steals its thunder. Any other thoughts? Dave |

Try being me, i got my 98GX2 computer like a week before the new cards came out hahaha....
I ordered in late May, got my computer mid June. If i knew itd take that long i wouldnt of minded waiting that extra month to order..plus i could of gotten something much better...but oh well! it gave me a chance to fiddle with my computer as I add upgrades.
What i plan to do from now on is like ride the tail end of the wave, and pick up used GPUs from people stepping up to the next big thing...I mean i got my second GX2 for only 165 bucks and it was only in the mans computer for a month+. im still in negotation with a man that is replacing is mobo and CPUs to a skulltrail, he has a QX9770, and its been in his computer 2 months+ or thereabouts, i could be getting one of those beasts for only 600 bucks.

there will always be something bigger, better, newer, and more expensive in any genre, the grass is always greener... im sure youve heard
what you need to ask yourself is if your computer's performance leaves you wanting. My cooling did so i fixed it, other than that, whats faster than instant, or looks better than perfect?

You can blame ATI for this. They now design a mediocre chip to easily be able to scale up and down instead of designing one powerful chip to scale down like their competition.
The 9800 GTX was never a flagship, the 9800GX2 was a flagship. But I don't even consider the Geforce 9 series a generation. Was just a die-shrink rebranded 8800GT... quite sad. Edited by skyR - 02 Jul 2008 at 2:31am |

The 9800 GTX reviewed well and was considered a better card in almost every review I read than the 9800gx2. It had significant changes of functionality, not as much difference as there was between the 7000 series and the 8000 series but nVidia has used the 800 moniker for their high end and the 600 moniker for their budget card and that same pairing exists in the 7000, 8000 and 9000 series cards thus why I considered it a flagship card.
As I said above, this thread was my curiosity about what others thought of the pace of technology and peoples thoughts on and plans for upgrades. It was and is a pure curiosity thread, nothing more. The performance of my machine is amazing, while at the same time what I see in fickle reviewers and buyers is just stunning. I guess my point here was to start a dialogue on the pace of increasing technology. Dave Edited by Kliebor2 - 02 Jul 2008 at 6:13am |

Sunfighter hit it dead on. Just because something new comes along doesn't instantly turn your system into a pile of doo! The consumer based technology field will always be geared to follow up products with bigger and better. At least, perceived bigger and better. This is how the industry flourishes. As ex-press, I've seen how this works firsthand. The press knows a year or two in advance about what is coming up in technology. The more prestigious or savvy reviewer will know even sooner about more. It's partly due to marketing and about continued revenue that the system operates this way. That doesn't mean that your purchases, present or future are junk. It's just the way they meter out the technology. If you care to look at it another way, your new rig was technically obsolete years ago. Still, the products weren't on the market, so where's the problem eh? Life goes on and so do technological advances. (and sales). We're the consumers and they're the manufacturers trying to make a living. It's the way of capitalism. P.S. If I pay the shipping, can I have your paperweight? Edited by widdlecat - 02 Jul 2008 at 4:49pm |

Yes, I suppose that makes sense. and I guess reviewers will review what is the hottest thing on the market.
Guess part of me longs for things to slow down just a little.... Maybe my old fogeyness Dave |

Its better to ride the wave just behind the bleeding edge. You get barely used high end stuff for dirt cheap because its "used". Only scary part is you have to deal with people and not stores, people are a lot more dangerous when it comes to getting screwed haha.
