My computer has been a lemon since the first month that I bought it. If anyone can help me fix it, it would be much appreciated.
About once a month, the computer either locked up or blue-screened. When I tried to restart, it said, "Disk read error". Digital storm replaced 4 hard drives for free, but I had to pay the shipping each time. I finally decided to ship the whole computer back so they could take a look at it. DS said that I had to pay the shipping - about $200. I deployed to Iraq and by the time that I decided to send it, the warranty was out. I never shipped it back. Each time the crash happened, I was either browsing windows, or playing a graphic intensive game, such as CoD4. I connected my 5th hard drive to the IDE cable rather than the SATA. It crashed about a week ago. A few of my friends say it would either be the mother board or the power supply. Here are my system specs: Case: Digital Storm Twister LITE (Black Aluminum Edition) If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated. I'd like to turn my $4,000 paper weight into a working computer. Out of curiosity, did you ever try to reformat any of the failed hard drives and do a fresh install of Windows?

Thanks for the replies guys.
I tried to reinstall Windows each time. Sometimes it worked for a week, sometimes it wouldn't install. Sometimes after reinstalling, I got a disk read error while trying to boot. I've ordered a new power supply and HD. I'll let you know if the problem persists. |

hmmm.....
Could be bad RAM, or bad PSU.
Try running memtest86. Its probably the PSU, but it can't hurt to check. I've also heard some roumers about the 780i randomly deleting from the HD; you could try a BIOS update on the motherboard.

After installing a new power supply and hard drive, it blue screened again today.
The computer rebooted after the blue screen, so I didn't have time to write down the code. I ran chdisk and it said the volume was good. Any other recommendations? Computer out of pocket cost tally to date: $353.89 |

Lord Pickle,
I am sorry to hear about the issues that you are having. If possible, give us a call or send us a message so we may help you (http://www.digitalstormonline.com/sendmessage.asp).
A blue screen can me a multiple of things to be honest with you. If I may ask, how long was it before it blue screened on you after the new hardware changes?
I would recommend doing the following to resolve this issue once and for all:
1. Is the system overclocked? If so, try turning that off.
2. Run MemTest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/download/2.10/memtest86+-2.10.iso.zip) - You will need to burn this ISO file to a CD. This will check if you have bad memory all the way to a stability issue along the lines of your memory.
3. Update your BIOS, and ensure you are using the latest WHQL drivers (not beta).
Report back results, I am sure we can resolve this promptly.
Warm Regards,
Alex

It happened again today and here is the error code:
0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0xbf8bca09, 0xb47de64c, 0x00000000) I googled it with no results. Any ideas? The computer is not overclocked. Edited by Lord Pickle - 05 Dec 2008 at 1:06am |

check your memory and update bios and see if you still get this, its pointing to a possible memory issue

0x1000008e points to 3 possible things (hardware, memory, drivers), the parameter after it specifies which of the 3.
0x1000008e with the parameter of 0xc0000005 according to MS points to a memory issue. are the people with creative errors have this sequence: 0x1000008e 0xc0000005, 0xbf8bca09 I'm not saying its not drivers, it very well could be, I was just interested in where you were coming from. guess we will find out when he tests it, lets hope you are right, cause that would be the least time consuming. otherwise its memtest for hours Edited by DST4ME - 05 Dec 2008 at 3:50pm |

Well like I said, lets hope its just the drivers, that would be the easiest to fix.
I'm a bit surprised to see 0xc0000005 being related to drivers tho, MS needs to update its codes maybe

Good idea Harleyman,
Please try these things:
-- Since your system is not overclocked, we don't have to worry about that now --
1. I would highly recommend you try booting your system from a MemTest86+ CD. I sent you a download link to the ISO image you can burn to a CD using Nero for example.
2. If that passes, it could be your sound card. In that case, I would recommend turning off the computer, removing the sound card from the system if you can, and enabling on-board audio (inside your BIOS peripherals section).
Let us know,
Alex

Thanks for the discussion guys, and thanks for using my rightful title - Lord Pickle!
![]() I did run MemTest86. It had 2 passes with no errors. I let it run the default test, and the 2 passes took about 1 hour and 40 minutes. Are there more tests that I should run with the software? I will pull out the sound card and see if that could be the problem. |

Actually I'd Run it longer then two hours, thats is no were near long enough to be conclusive. Give that a try, and we can wrk on other things when my pain pills wear of. I'd also take a look at the board, i've seen alot of 680's die and its very possible. Edited by Chris W. - 05 Dec 2008 at 11:51pm |

I just had it crash again with another error:
0x00000024 (0x001902fe, 0xb67426d0, 0xb67423cc, 0xba64474f) I had already taken out the sound card. I have access to the minidump files from all 3 crashes on this new HD. Would those be helpful for anyone to look at? |

boot to recovery console from your windows cd and run chkdsk command
Chkdsk /f /r check your hdd and its cables and make sure everything is tight. that code is pointing to bad/corrupt sectors in your HDD. Edited by DST4ME - 06 Dec 2008 at 9:00pm |

Now MemTest86 did something different. At about 4% it showed over 46,000 errors and rebooted the computer while the number was rising. I restarted and MemTest86 rebooted the computer at 4% before showing any errors. Now the computer is sitting at the bootup(not windows) screen and not going anywhere.

I've already run Chkdsk and it passed.
I've replaced 6 hard drives now. I doubt the cables were loose on all of them.

did you run check disk with these parameters: /f /r
but if you are getting the same error on 6 different HDDs then its something else. this is all pointing to bad ram IMO. Edited by DST4ME - 06 Dec 2008 at 9:07pm |
