Ok, so I pulled the trigger and ordered a brand-new DS rig.

This machine will be replacing a (significantly upgraded) five-year-old HP.

I have a lot (ok, a LOT-a-lot) of downloaded and installed games and other apps. I really, really don't want to have to go through all that again, even though I have about half of the downloads stored on-disk.

So...

I'm looking at two different migration products.

1) LapLink's "PCMover", $50 (on sale this week)
2) EaseUS's "PCTrans", $20 (also on sale this week.)

Both go up by about $20 next week.

I've used products from both over the years. I currently have EaseUS's "ToDo Backup", and had experience with LapLink about the time WinXP first appeared.

PCTrans
Pros:
Cheaper! (Always an important consideration, especially when the functionality is similar.)

Cons:
Brand-new product (can you say "guinea pig"?)
Chinese company w/ poor documentation and time-shifted tech support.
Must have both PCs on the same "stable" (meaning "wired") network, so limited to 100Mbps for my environment.

PCMover
Pros:
Established US company.
Track record in this space.
Proprietary USB2.0 cable delivers ~480Mbps transfer speed

Cons:
$30 more expensive.

But...

Willing to hear about other options!

I did a quick search and noticed that Microsoft worked with LapLink to provide a free PC Mover solution to folks migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 or later.

As for myself, I usually reinstall all the applications and migrate my data via an external HDD or a cloud service such as DropBox. Doing it this way with the rare migration or the more usual OS reinstallation gives me a chance to start with clean registry (no left over, dead entries) as well as get rid of some older apps and games that I no longer need on disk. Thanks, Theokritos! (Why a 3rd cent. BCE poet as a username, BTW?)

I'm aware of the trade-offs with doing a migration vs. a clean re-install. I just have too much that would require a full download (at my pathetic 2.5Mbps DSL connection speed) to be willing to go that route unless there were an overriding argument to do so.

I started using the name for one my many avatars in various MMOs. Since it is Greek, it is also usually available as a User ID on English language forums.
