So I'm going to pick up a rig from here but I just need a monitor. Now I'll be going to school next year and id like two get something that can be used as both a tv and something for my gaming consoles, and a monitor for my computer.

The two set-ups I'm looking at are

So should I get a HDTV that can be used as both or a monitor. What would be more efficient, least expensive, and able to do everything I need. I'd like to be able to get the largest size possible too. Thanks in advanced.

A television is designed for long distance viewing where as monitors are designed for up close. So if you plan on having guests over sharing a couch from far away, a TV is better.

You can't get a cheap monitor to use for TV unless you don't care about quality of the picture at all. You'll looking to spend at least $600 on a 24"+ monitor if you care about picture quality.

Just wait for Black Friday and I'm sure you can pick up a 40" HDTV and a nice monitor for under $1000 in total.
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

I recently purchased a 26" Samsung T260HD (TV and PC monitor) for use at 1920 x 1200 @ 60 and I'm not happy with it. The graphic presentation is no where close to being as good as my 3 year old Sony 24" monitor on my old computer at the same res and freq. with a 4 year old video card and aging CPU. If your primary use is for PC I'd spend some time comparing different units at BB or wherever. Maybe I didn't set mine up right but I downloaded the manual, even installed Samsungs specific drivers and I still don't like it on the PC. It's grainy and pale or washed out at any settings I choose. Shop more carefully than I did.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

Yeah, I would rather not purchase both a tv, and a computer monitor for space reasons. Like I said it will be used in a college dorm. I thought just any HDTV would work well enough that can be accessed by a computer but idk =/
