Greetings Hardware Discussion Forum!

While I am hunting for the right computer for myself, I am using an older computer for some of my needs. However, it is dreadfully slow, and I was hoping that I could get some performance advice for this computer. The system specs are as follows:

Compaq Presario 5000
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.00 GHz
RAM: 1.50 GB
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
Hard Drive: 37 GB, of which 15GB is free

What do you think? Should I just upgrade the RAM to improve its operating speed, or should the Hard Drive be replaced with a faster version?

ohhhh, upgrade the ram and HDD right away. but don't expect anything big, your main speed is your cpu's speed tho with a bit more ram you should get what you need, your ram is at the bottom of what you need for win7.

Thanks for the prompt reply, DST. By the way, will RAM also affect how easily I can watch videos online? Or is that determined more by the CPU and GPU?

Is that a dual core cpu?  I've never seen Windows 7 perform well on any single core cpu.  You're on the right website to solve all your problems Thumbs%20Down

well if you are low on ram, more ram will seem like speed, once so it could help but cpu and ram are more of a factor.

Ok, more RAM, got it. Do you know what kind of RAM would be compatible with this computer? I don't want to upgrade the RAM and overheat the system or something.

@police215: I know, right? I had to dig this computer out of the basement since my HP laptop imploded. Hopefully I can get a DS rig at just the right price ($1500 plus or minus a hundred bucks).
