I'm looking to have this built and add my old GeForce 9800 GT to it since I bought the card not too long ago and figure it'd be a waste not to use it. But would this card help boost performance for this rig or is it not worth it? Is mixing 2 different video cards a bad idea?
I usually play MMOs like WoW and other games like Fallout or Bioshock, Dragon Age etc. but not so much Modern Warfare or Call of Duty.
Also, I always run in 1680 X 1050 resolution
My price range is about $2000 so I don't really want to go much higher.
Total Price with Instant Savings: $2,165.00

Yes I sometimes like to watch some movies on my PC as I don't have a decent HDTV yet. Also I wasn't sure if I really needed 6gigs of RAM so I went with 3gigs of higher performance Corsair RAM instead. Should I go with 6? Is there a considerable difference? And I don't mind spending a little more on the mobo.
Taking some of your advice I modified my setup. Additionally, I don't mind spending a little over $2000 as you may have noticed my first config was $2,165.
Going back to my original question a bit, would my old GeForce 9800 be a good addition or would it not be worth it? Also, I would prefer to stick with Nvidia instead of ATI.
And is the AIR: Stage 1: Cooler Master V8 High Performance Cooler (Compatible With ONLY i7 Processors) better than the H20: Stage 2: Asetek Liquid CPU Cooler (120mm Radiator) for this?

Yeah you should get 6GB of RAM, 3GB is pretty low, you don't need anything higher than 1600mhz though. Whether you would notice a considerable difference or not really depends on what your doing and how much multitasking it involves.
Not sure if the 9800 would be a good addition, that's a question for the smarter ones to answer . Do you have a reason why you want to go with NVIDIA? Because ATI really has the edge right now. NVIDIA is overpriced and you get less for your money than you will if you buy ATI. The current NVIDIA cards also do not support DX11, the ATI cards do. Also, I'm not positive about the cooler question, but I believe the V8 is better than the Asetek . Edited by TheTrickster - 23 Feb 2010 at 9:28pm |

you won't notice teh difference in ram speed, but in multi taskign and editing and such you gonna want more ram so go with 6GB of 1600MHz, on this pic the ds certified.
asetek is not real liquid cooling, and its not great at all, it performs the same as air coolers listed. v8 and Noctua have a track record and the d14 will eatup the asetek for lunch. I love nvidia too but for the money: 1. the 5850 is much better then the 285, it can handle higher res better then 285, 5850 has dx11 support which means better performance for current dx10 games and now and future dx11 games, remember there is gonna be 6 or 7 dx11 games coming out in a month or so, and if you want to oc, it oc-s better. with the 5850 the 9800 card is not needed, I didn't build you a system based on cost, I first went and gave you what you needed to run games at highest settings and 8x aa and 16x af plus being able to possibly go cf, when I was done the price is what you see. if I were to throw more money at that sytem, the only thing I would change with the haf you don't need the fan upgrade, the haf case has 3 x 230mm fans, HAF stans for High Air FLow, so it has great ariflow stock, the fan upgrade will not make a huge difference and they are loud, what they do is change the side 230mm fan with 4 x 120mm and the top 230mm fan with 2 x 120mm. drop the oc from the gpu, you might see 1 fps difference from it, for more heat. the os tweak is not needed and if you need one of those services later you maybe in trouble. if I were to throw money in taht system, only thing I would change in my config would be to add your bluray player, get the 3x sli mobo, and then if there is room look at a ssd. the other things will not make a difference in performance. |

To back up what DST4 and I said about NVIDIA/ATI:
The 285 is roughly $400, while the 5850 is roughly $300. Plus the 5850 has DX11, as mentioned before. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks a ton guys! Extremely helpful info. I wasn't sure if the fan upgrade would actually mean they would be quieter but it's good to know they're actually louder and not needed for this case so I went back down to standard fans. Quieter is good
I also forgot to mention I already have a fast external DVD writer but I don't have a Bluray player at all which is why I wanted to go for that upgrade.
It's $2255 but I don't mind a little extra cash spent over my $2k goal. I'm almost ready to order. Here's looking to be my final setup if it looks good to you guys. I took off the overclock and tweaking per DST4ME's advice and also upgraded to Windows 7 pro for Xp compatibility etc.

all looks good if you can for a $20 difference the Noctua NH-U12P is worth it.
but listen you don't need teh 5870, you want the 5850, at your res you will not notice teh difference, as in I can come in the middle of the night and change the 5870 with 5850 and you would never know. |

I knew it, DST4 is a ninja .If nothing else, the 5870 is merely for future proof-ness right? Considering his resolution anyway. Because it could make a difference in the future when games get more graphicly intensive for the two cards right? |

if games get that intensive then 1 x 5870 is not gonna be enough either.
paying more for a part now does is not a good idea vs saving that money and buying a better gpu 2 years from now, that is real future proof. also with a good oc the 5850 can match the performance of a 5870. |

I hope he isn't. He'd probably sneak in at night and smack a bunch of us By the time games get that intensive for that resolution it'll probably be time for an upgrade anyway I would guess.

At some point I might upgrade to a higher resolution. Right now I'm used to the 1680X1050 but it's always nice to be able to go higher and keep performance if I get a bigger screen or maybe just to see what it's like.
I used to always be 1280X1024 and I never thought I'd go higher but then I changed my ways.
I'll go for the better fan as per your advice, DST.
Thanks for all the help everybody!
