Budget: Preferably less than 3000
Expectations: I hope that the laptop can last 3 years before I NEED an upgrade. Usage: Game development and gaming. Since I'm a computer science student with a concentration in game design, I felt like I needed to make the switch to a better laptop and DS looks really good so far. Specs: Chassis Model: Digital Storm x15E Laptop (Model: 9150) Display: 15.6 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Glossy Surface) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 3820QM (2.7 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.7Ghz) (Quad Core) (8MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Premium IC Diamond CPU and GPU Thermal Compound (Reduces Thermal & Laptop Noise) Memory: 12GB DDR3 1600MHz Primary Hard Drive: 750GB Hybrid 7200RPM with 8GB SSD (SATA 3Gb/s) Secondary Hard Drive: - Not Available Optical Drive: DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Wireless Card: Bigfoot Networks Killer Wireless-N 1103 (Reduces Latency for Online Gaming) Video Card(s): AMD Radeon HD 7970M 2GB Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Warranty Plan: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty I have a few questions. 1) Would running games/programs off of an external drive with a 7200 RPM hurt performance or only loading speed? 2) Same question but different scenario. Would my Hybrid HD get worse performance than a single SSD or would it just hurt loading speed for programs and boot? 3) If I wanted to install Linux on my computer, would it be advised that I use another hard drive for Linux? 4) How does my current configuration look? Also, sorry for being such a computer noob. Edited by Hayv - 18 Jun 2012 at 10:54am |

1 and 2) It should only hurt performance if you ever in the event of paging file usage, and with 12GB of RAM, that should hopefully never be an issue.
3) You could just partition the hard drive, and it would be fine without adding a second drive. 750GB is more than enough space foro your needs, and there is really no reason to buy a second drive. In fact, I was just talking to a friend yesterday who has Windows 7 and Linux mint on his one hard drive. 4) I like it, although the Bigfoot Networks killer is probably a little overkill. Also, Windows 7 Professional is probably only worth it if you intend to use more than 16GB of RAM, so you may just want to go with Home Edition. I really like your CPU and GPU, and I like the hard drive, although if you do the previous suggestions, you could probably reroute the money to putting an SSD as the primary and an HDD as the secondary instead of the hybrid drive.
