I'm planning to buy next spring, and I set up a configuration that I am HOPING will fall into the $3000-$3500 range by March 2009. I am willing to save up and wait until June if I have to, but I've decided that I am willing to wait and do what it takes to get a machine that meets my expectations.

My main focus here was speed. I went with the Q9550 just to stay away from the Xtreme core prices, and I think I will be happy with the speed I get from that. Of course if Nehalem comes along first, I may opt for that.
I'm sure the 4GB RAM at 1333Mhz will do me right. I see that there are higher Mhz options for the same amount of RAM, but I am unknowledgeable about what difference it would really make. Would the 2GB RAM @ 1800MHz be faster than the regular 4GB at 1333Mhz? You tell me.
Then there's the SSDs. I chose the 128GB Solid State Disks in a RAID 0 Stripe configuraton, with the intent to have Windows and other apps load faster. I'm guessing that since SSDs generate less heat that Stage 3 air cooling in the Cosmos case will be sufficient for the Q9550 and the GTX 280.
This is where I may get some value out of someone with firsthand experience: Are SSDs really helpful in improving the speed of your machine? And are they so noticeably faster than say, the 10000RPM harddrives that it would be worth it, or should I stick with harddrives, maybe 10000RPMs, and get better cooling? My thoughts were that next year, SSDs may become the preferred choice for enthusiasts, especially as games and such become more demanding. I don't want June to come along and make me feel like my practically brand-new baby is old news.
Of course I realize I'll be doing this all over again when I actually have the money together, and there will be different options.

Everything now will be obsolete by next spring so just wait until than to start planning...
Also everything will change by that time... ram speed might actually mean something with Nehalem. |

Sure, but the new stuff is just going to be pricy all over again, right? I'm out of the loop as to what new chipsets go for at launch, but I want to be "high-end" as possible without going too far over $3000. The thing's only going to last me a few years.
Does it make sense to think that the new motherboards/processors in early 2009 are going to force me to compromise on other parts of the PC in order to spend less? I'm going to want a very nice video card. I'm upgrading from a single-core 2.2GHZ and a Geforce 8500GT that I got from Best Buy, so the configuration I've done here is already amazing in comparison. At the moment, it's a $5,000 PC. I'm not willing to spend more.
