Hey everybody, i've been shopping around for a new computer for christmas and I think i've finally chosen what i want to get. I stumbled recently on to DS and I am impressed. I was looking into Cyberpower and Ibuypower before because of my budget (around $1500) but DS's reputation and customer service seems top notch and won me over. this will be the first high end computer for me, I like to play some games now (WOW and the sims) but i would like to play some newer games on my computer (e.g. assassin's creed, dead space) with good FPS and the options turned up. I'll probably play at a 1600x1024 resolution and just wondering if i have anything that i don't need or something doesn't play well with others.

From what I have gathered from the rest of the people on the forums, SLI isnt really needed for resolutions over 1600x1050. And other than games that fully utilize SLI you will only get a 10-30% increase in performance. So imo... I would drop a vid card and upgrade my memory (667 is pretty slow) and the the Cooler Master HAF. Also you can spend an extra 16 bucks and get the 500 gig HD
This is what I ended up with.. Ticket Number : 203290 Price: 1570.00 |

Oh maybe I thought you said that it wasnt needed if you were going with 1600x1050 or less... or did you mean 1600x1050 was included so it would be 1600x1050 and higher res you would want SLI???

its actually 1680 x 1050 but anything around it or with 1600 most times would fall in that catagory.
so anything around that or above DS recommends 2 vcards. now keep in mind that the 4870x2 is build for high res, so that one card can do 1680 x 1050 or higher on its own. ofcourse it also costs as much as 2 cards

i'm trying to keep this configuration under $1600 (including monitors and stuff) in order to convince my stepdad to order from this website, i can't see myself going back to cyberpower or ibuypower after reading all the horror stories with them. I think i'm gonna go with the 800mhz ram instead and i'll start looking at newegg.com for a monitor and accessories. I was wondering if overclocking really makes a big difference, or if overclocking the CPU instead of the GPU yeilds better results or vice versa. and also is the HAF case much better than the Antec (I think the Antec is more appealing) or is it only a marginal difference. thanks again for all your help, this helps me out so much!

HAF has better cooling and airflow, OC the CPU is much better.
if you go with my configuration, down the road your system can handle up to 2 x 260 GTX. DS is definitely the right place, so far from what I have seen every customer that has had something go wrong, has been taken care of to the point that they would by from DS again and recommend a friend, to me as a customer, that says alot. |

DST4ME posted a real nice build. He has a real good idea of what he's doing so I would heed his words.
(sorry to hijack the thread)
I have a question for you though DST4ME, if gaming at 1680X1050, do you think its worth going SLI/Crossfire?
I currently have a single Visontek 4870 and gaming at 1680X1050 and wondering if it would be worth it to get another for Crossfire.
I want to stay with the same company, but looking on newegg it looks like Visiontek changed the cooler on the 4870 and was wondering if its any good or if I should go with perhaps a Sapphire?

Sneakerz, to be honest, if you are happy with your what your card is doing at your resolution then no, you don't need another card.
But if you are not content with the settings your 4870 is giving you, and you see room for improvement which your single card can't handle, then yes, go crossfire. Its all about if you are happy playing with your current settings or not. now when you say 4870 you don't mean the 4870x2 right? cause if you have the x2 version then no you don't need another card at all. lol Edited by DST4ME - 07 Nov 2008 at 1:11pm |

Right just 4870 not the X2 heh. What about the new visontek cooling? Cause it looks like it will just dump hot air into my case which I don't want. I wanted to stick with the same company, but not with that kind of cooling.
You think it will be ok if I have one Visiontek and one Sapphaire?
