    Posted: 22 Nov 2010 at 1:09pm
Hi all. Been struggling lately to decide whether or not I really need a new computer, and getting linked here by a friend certainly hasn't helped in the least... in the end, I think Black November is probably too worth it to pass up.  :)

Anyway, here's my proposed config. I'm looking at a budget of no more than $2000, with the catch being that this has to include shipping to Canada and the slight markup when the price gets converted to the CAD. I've already got all the peripherals, just looking at the tower here.
It'll mostly be a gaming/multi-purpose PC, with the most common games being Blizzard ones. Then again, I've never really owned a computer worth playing much else on, so who knows what else I'll get up to? I'm currently using a 32" TV as my monitor, in 1900x1080, if that makes any difference.
Ideally, I'd like this to last reasonably well for a good amount of time (say 3-4 years?).

I'm pretty confident with most of what I've got here, gained from browsing around the forums. My major question revolves around the video card: Is it worth the $200-some jump to get to the 480? Is there a dual-card solution that I'd be better off with?

Also, I'd like to briefly ask if there's anything weird with the international shipping I have to do. Any notes I have to make anywhere, or something?

Thanks in advance for your time!

I think you have a great setup. You have some solid choices and it should give you the performance you are looking for.

In regards to shipping, keep in mind as well that there will be customs and brokerage charges as well that you will need to pay. I know you took into consideration shipping costs, but want to make sure you are aware of all the costs.

If you want to send me an e-mail you can and I can get you a customs quote.

build looks pretty good to me, you may bump up to a 1000w psu since the price of 470s seems to be coming down pretty quick
no idea how much shipping/customs/cad conversion would make it, but for under $2000 USD you can get up to a 580 if you are interested

worth mentioning though that 470 sli is still stronger than a single 580

Yeah. I mean, even if I bump up to a 580 with all the stuff from my proposed build, it still comes in under $2k US. I'm still considering it, depending on what the cost of getting it to Canadia turns out to be, and what I end up getting for holiday bonuses... >.>

personally i don't' think the gtx 580 is worth $200 markup due to high demand. it would be more worth it to do sli 470 and that would be better than a gtx 580 but you would need a 1000w psu.

Yeah, I made my comment before the 580's price shot up. It isn't even on the table for me anymore.

For curiosity's sake, of the 1000W PSUs, is the Corsair one worth the extra $$$ over the DS Certified?

yea it sucks but in a month or two the price will level back up...
The corsair psus are more expensive because they will last longer than the ds certified one and also have a bit less ripple noise.

Okay, so... Let's go through this one last time so I can completely settle my mind.

I am, somewhat, concerned about the ability of the 470 to last me to the end of my desired life-cycle for this PC. Need I be?

Now, all this will depend on what Sarah gets me for a to-Canada quote, and keeping in mind that the November deal is basically the only thing making this possible, my GPU upgrades are:
- 1x 480 for $212
- 1x 580 for $417
- 2x 470 and 1000W PSU for $398
- 1x 470 and 1000W PSU for $116 now and an unspecified amount later for a second

If the answer to the first question is no, what do you guys think of my options on the second, there?

well with a single 470 you probably won't be able to run things with max settings now and in the future it will get worse so you will probably get a second but heres the problem with that. If you got a single 480 and then upgraded it to the 780 or something in the future the 780 would last another 4 years or so. But if you get a 470 and in the future upgrade to sli 470 it will probably last much less time than upgrading a 480 to the newest card.
with 2 470s you have something that is better than a single 480. So that should last a while. The only problem with that is that a few games don't support sli so therefore your stuck with a single 470 in a few games. also some games for high graphics require more oncard memory than the 470 has and the memory from the 2 cards doesn't add up so that might be a bigger problem in the future.
A 580 is of course off the table for now at least.

I think you are best going with the gtx 480 right now because it will last you almost as long as sli 470s and has more memory on the card. Plus you can save and get a smaller psu and it costs half the price (almost) of sli 470s.
Thats just my 2 cents.

this is an impossible question to answer, too many factors
long story short is that its hard to go too wrong, they are all good cards, the 470 is by far the most fairly priced at this time.
i think id personally get 1 or 2 470s and then just start saving for a new card when you get limited. no setup you can buy right now will be competitve in your 3-4 year range

Yeah, that makes sense. With my budget constraints, there're no real silver bullet solutions here. Best to just go for value and upgradability, and be content that even so it blows my current setup out of the water.

Thanks for the input, guys.

So, I ended up ordering the config in my original post (with a 500 gig HDD, though - I can't fill the 250 on my current one, a terabyte would be wasteful), and now the GTX 570 comes out...

From all I can see, it would be a good idea to up my 470 to the 570, seeing as it's actually within my budget unlike all the others. Good idea?

(Also, to do that, should I just call DS, or is there somebody specific to e-mail, or...?)

If I had to choose between 470 and 570 I'd definitely go 570 if I could possibly afford it.
