Hi everyone, I've been looking around for a sub-$2000 gaming pc, and this setup seems pretty solid, but I have a few questions. Here's my config for around $1869.
Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master CM Storm Scout Exterior Finish: - Not Available Trim Accents: - Not Available Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P6T (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 3GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - Not Available Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - Not Available Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 22x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Asetek Liquid CPU Cooler (120mm Radiator) H20 Tube Color:- Not Available Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Red) Enhancements: - Not Available Chassis Mods: - Not Available Noise Reduction: - Not Available Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Requires Air Cooling Upgrade) Boost Video Card: FREE: Yes, Overclock the video card(s) as much as possible with complete stability Boost Memory: - Not Available Boost OS: - Not Available Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - Not Available Office: - Not Available Benchmarking: - Not Available Install/Test Game: FREE: Please include a free copy of a hot-selling game Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty First of all, I will play on my 1680 x 1050 monitor. I only have 3gb ram in this setup and I'm wondering if it's going to be enough for windows 7 and gaming. I'm not a big multitasker. Is the extra $122 worth it to upgrade to 6gb. How does the Asetek perform compared to stock cooling? Any suggestions on the video card selection? I was thinking about getting 2 5770's in crossfire, (which gives out great performance according to reviewers) but just getting 1 5870 seems to be a little safer as far as upgradeability goes and will cut out the possibility of games not supporting crossfire. And just to be noted, I want DX11. Here's another possible configuration that uses p55 for around $1740. Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master CM Storm Scout Exterior Finish: - Not Available Trim Accents: - Not Available Processor: Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA P55 SLI (Intel P55 Chipset) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - Not Available Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - Not Available Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 22x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: High Performance Cooler (Compatible With ONLY i5/AMD Processors) H20 Tube Color:- Not Available Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Blue) Enhancements: - Not Available Chassis Mods: - Not Available Noise Reduction: - Not Available Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Requires Air Cooling Upgrade) Boost Video Card: FREE: Yes, Overclock the video card(s) as much as possible with complete stability Boost Memory: - Not Available Boost OS: - Not Available Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - Not Available Office: - Not Available Benchmarking: - Not Available Install/Test Game: FREE: Please include a free copy of a hot-selling game Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty From reading around, this config is going to be a lot less upgrade-friendly, but I get an extra 1gb of ram and save $129. I got rid of the Asetek and put in a "High Performance Cooler" (I have no idea what it is). How does this perform? Woah, that was a lot of questions. I don't need the answers to everything, but suggestions would be just awesome. $1900 is my limit. Edited by bktabor - 10 Feb 2010 at 12:11am |

this is what you want boss, 2 x 5770 will match 1 x 5850, so might as well go with that, with below system you can go dual cf/sli.
the 6GB of ram is worth it to be coverd for gaming/multi tasking. I know top of the thread you said $2000 but I thought I run this by you cause this is a beast that will not need upgrading for good long while: Here you go Ticket# 382230 --- Price: $2011 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $2011 Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master CM Storm Sniper Exterior Finish: - Not Available Trim Accents: - Not Available Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - Not Available Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - Not Available Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 22x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x ATI Radeon HD 5850 1GB Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler (Compatible With ONLY i7 Processors) H20 Tube Color:- Not Available Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Red) Enhancements: - Not Available Chassis Mods: - Not Available Noise Reduction: - Not Available Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Requires Air Cooling Upgrade) Boost Video Card: - Not Available Boost Memory: - Not Available Boost OS: - Not Available Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - Not Available Office: - Not Available Benchmarking: - Not Available Install/Test Game: FREE: Please include a free copy of a hot-selling game Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty Edited by DST4ME - 10 Feb 2010 at 3:29am |

Thanks for the reply. That is one kickass system. The only question I have is: why don't you have free video card overclocking enabled? I've read you say it makes almost no difference, but I think when done right, it can make a 5850 as good or better than a 5870. Look at this 5850 review: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/sapphire_hd5850/7.htm
The 5850 OC just obliterates everything else in these Far Cry 2 benchmarks. I even did some math and found it the overclocked card had a mean average of about 15% improvement over the stock card through all of overclockersclub.com's benchmarks (1680x1050). This was about a 15% oc to the core and a 22.5% oc to the memory. According to DS's expert guide section, we should expect a 7-10% oc. This could potentially mean a 7-10% increase in performance. |

Well lets corrrect a few things, first, I said the oc that DS does is moderate and will not make much of a difference. a good solid high oc will change everything.
second, I don't know what that guy is using but I have never seen a 5850 or a 5870 get 70fps at 2560 x 1600 like this guys is claiming, oh never mind I see he is at only 2x aa, lets jack up the aa and see what happens, you won't have the same resluts. third for 1600 x 1200 I always recommend the 5850 anyways. forth when I say it will not make a difference, what I mean is that if you are getting 50 to 60 fps in a game, you won't notice the difference if you oc and get 70 fps. in short there is no point to oc if you don't need the extra power to begin with. hope that clears it up. |

Yeah, that makes sense. So Crysis seems to be the only game worth overclocking for. I doubt I'll play it though.

you know what is funny is that I recommend the 5850 to most people that are on a budget and I then advise them to oc it if they need the extra power to match a 5870, I never got a chance to tell you that
ya you gonna be just fine with a 5850 |

Yeah. I'm definitely going with the 5850. It'll be a huge upgrade to my current system with a 9800gt
