Hi All,
I am looking to purchase a new machine. Here is the base config I am thinking about. The prime use would be for photoshop CS5.5 and some video editing in Adobe Premier CS 5.5. I am also in the process of turning my old PC into a HTPC, and backing up all my dvds/bluRays to it (about 300 disks). I wanted to wait for the new z68 chipset to take advantage of the Virtu technology, which should help in any file conversion ie BluRay to MKV. In the setup I am toying with the idea of getting a 256 GB SSD (Corsair Performance 3). The idea is to keep the operating system on most of the disk and reserve 64 GBs for Quick sinking to 2X 3TB Hitachi Deskstars in Raid 0. I have a blu-ray burner that I will transfer over from my existing PC. I'm also toying with the idea of swapping the cooler out (I have the Noctua NH-D14). Questions are:1) is it worth trying to Quick sync the raid array? Or should I go for a cheaper, smaller drive, such as the Corsair Performance 3 128GB SSD, and not really worry about quick syncing. Will I loose something like TRIM if I do? Any other recommendations are welcome. 2) Is the z68 board they are offering here worth it or would I be better off with something like the Asus P8P67 Delux? 3) If I am going for the Corsair 650D case, should I worry about springing for the extra noise suppression package 2? We don't recommend the noise package here:
1. noise is only an issue with the gpu's fan when under load. 2. when teh gpu fan is under heavy load, nothing is gonna help you with its noise, unless you put it under LC. for ssds go with intel 320 series, they have the best reliability and they are the only ssds on teh market right now with 5 year warranty. I'm not a big expert in quick sync but I thought it was for transcoding video. Thanks for the recommendation, I had a few additional questions. Can I mix SataII (intel 320) with Sata III (Hitachi DeskStar) on the same controller for setting up quick sync? My guess is yes, but I'll loose the speed of SataIII. If I wanted all SataIII, what would be your recommendation for the SSD? Intel 510 series? Should I try to go with SataIII ? I have read some reviews suggesting that there may be problems with getting TRIM to work on SataIII.The read/write speeds of the 510 series seems to be faster, should I also be concerned with something else? Should I stay away from the Hitachi Desk Stars? The system will be backed up to a larger raid array (Synology 411+ II).
Thanks, Jason |

I'm assuming that Hitachi DeskStar is a conventional HDD? If so then heh, it isn't going to come anywhere remotely close to tapping out a SATA 2 3Gb/s port. They just slap a SATA 3 Gb/s label on it for marketing, it isn't anywhere quick enough to take advantage of a SATA 3 6Gb/s port bandwidth.
Intel 510 series isn't worth the price premium in my opinion, they have high sequential speeds but lousy small file speeds. I would recommend either just stick with an Intel 320 series or if you really feel like pushing the bandwidth of a SATA 6Gb/s port that badly then a Crucial C300.
Only with Marvell's crappy hack version of SATA 6Gb/s ports. Not only do these not support TRIM but have horrible performance in general and stability issues. Avoid these at all cost and stick with Intel SATA 6Gb/s ports. Even take Intel SATA 3Gb/s ports over the Marvell ones, they will perform better.
Again, only faster sequential (large file) speeds, they have slower small file speeds than most SSDs.
Some people are brand whores and will say to avoid them just because they're Hitachi brand, but I prefer to look at them at a drive by drive level and see if they're worth it. That said, I've never actually read a single review or anything on Desk Stars, so you'll have to do some research yourself to see if they're solid enough HDDs or not. |

Thanks guys I pulled the trigger and went with the 120 GB Intel 320. I didn't need all 300 GB, even the 160 might be a little large for just the OS. So far I like the deskstars, they were the most reasonably priced 3TB, 7200 rpm drives. I'll probably put a few of them in the system.
