I do a lot of gaming you name it FPS', MMORPGS, RTS etc.I'm looking for a new rig that I can upgrade without major issues in the future. Your thoughts? My budget around a max of 3.5kish.

Or going a 8800 Ultra KO since the regular ultras are out. Also i'm not real computer savy so I'll ask. For this type of set up is it okay to just go with the upgraded air cooling, or should I look into liquid?
Ohh and one last thing. Are the Bigfoot network cards worth their salt?
Thanks in advance Edited by Rank393 - 13 Feb 2008 at 11:56pm |

you probably dont need that 1250mhz memory, in most peoples opinion its not worth the increased speed for the price.
Do not get McAfee. Everybody i've talked to says the bigfoot network card is not worth it.
You'd be okay with air cooling, but I wish I got liquid myself. Edited by Solo - 13 Feb 2008 at 11:58pm |

I'll get the Bigfoot question out of the way first, since that one is easy. The answer is "No". I'm not a big fan of the Phys-X card either, but I'd install one of those before I installed a network card.Air Cooling vs Liquid cooling:Liquid cooling is going to get you the best possible result. The Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro that DSO uses is fine for overclocking Core2Duos but it does struggle a little with the Core2Quads. You should see ~3.0 GHz without too much trouble on that cooler with a decent case and RAM, but more than that starts to get a bit trickier. If you want to see the highest overclock possible, just go for the liquid cooling. If you would be happy with an overclock in the 2.7GHz to 3.15GHz range, air cooling will be fine. The graphics cards are a tougher call. If you want more performance than a single 8800GTS (G92) can provide, I would probably opt to SLi given the options currently available. The configuration screen isn't saving at the moment, so I used a screen shot for a proposed build. You may be able to request an air cooler more suited to overclocking quads as a measure between the least expensive liquid cooling and the normal stage 2 air cooling. It would also be a good idea to load up on the additional case fans (just request them when you place your order) if you want more performance from an air cooled system. The faster RAM is a waste IMO. You'll see more performance out of more of the slower RAM if it's used in a 64 bit environment. Otherwise, I can't recommend going past 2GB of PC8500. Edited by Alex - 27 Feb 2014 at 4:16pm |
