I was wondering what kind of power supply and cooling system would you recommend for a computer with:

750Si chassis
amd phenom 9550 2.2 ghz quad core 4 mb cache am2+ processor
nvidia 750a sli motherboard
4gb ddr2 corsair at 667 mhz system memory
500gb western digital 16 mb cache 7200 rpm SATA hard drive
nvidia geforce 8800gts 640 mb video card
integrated motherboard audio sound card
no overclocks
XP Pro OS

Also, I would greatly appreciate any other help you could give me on this particular computer, especially recommendations as to any changes I can make in other categories so I can get components which operate well together.

Thanks

p.s. this is my first post here and I don't know that much about computers so rip this configuration apart if you need to, just try and keep it under $2,000

gabe, i like what bismark built for you, but i did want to mention: youll get a great machine for around 2k, dont get me wrong... but youll see a substantial increase in price:performance for a few hundred more.
is there a reason you opted for no overclocks? were you planning to do it yourself?

Hi, sorry for the lack of info on what I wanted to do with it. I like to play games mostly and would definitely like to play the best games out there with perfect performance on at least pretty good graphics settings, but I also really want a machine which is super reliable and durable and won't break down on me. I don't need the very top of the line computer, just "the best bang for my buck" that can still get the job done.

Also, I mostly prefer RTS games if that helps at all (I think they usually have lower graphics demands than FPS's like Crysis but I'm not really sure). If you need an example I like Medieval 2 total war and I'm looking forward to Empire Total War and Spore as well, so something which could run those games with peak performance would be great.

thanks again for all the help

p.s. I just heard that over-clocking can mess up your computer's reliability and life-span but I could be totally wrong and I'm sure DS knows how to install some really good overclocks so I'd also like some advice on that field.

What !ender built for you looks great to me and should fullfill any needs you have. As far as overclocking goes, its covered under your DS warranty if they do it so I'm a fan of having them twist it up a bit. Let us know if your firm on no more than 2k if so im sure we can try to get you some examples of a decent 2k build.

I like !ender's configuration.

I just want XP pro instead of Vista and I also need speakers and I'm thinking about the 'Microsoft Multimedia Desktop 2.0 (Multimedia Keyboard + Optical Wheel Mouse)' for $30 extra. Is that a decent mouse and keyboard? Any advice on these decisions would be much appreciated.

Also, if I overclock, what should I overclock and what shouldn't I overclock?

And is the stage 3 cooling really loud, I heard that somewhere. I can deal with some noise but not if it's over the top loud.

Also, how do I know which video card to pick, is the one he chose the right choice for this system?

Is an upgrade to a 500 GB hard drive from !ender's suggested 320 worth it? It's only $25 extra.

Finally, what about the 'tweak the services on the OS' option?

sorry, a few more questions

Is a quad or duo processor better for what I want to do?

What is G0 Stepping?

And (sorry this one is kind of vague) I have no idea what kind of motherboard to choose, would you say !ender's choice is the best for the money?

Is more than one video card worth it? My monitor is 24 inches and it is a Mac (which could conflict I think), but I also have a smaller hp monitor (f1905b 19") which I could use.

And how much would over-clocking take away from the lifespan of my computer? I know they know what they are doing and there is a 3 year warranty but I still don't want a huge hassle with potential unreliability/having to send my computer back just for some extra overclocking which I might not even need

is there a reason you want xp over vista? keep in mind that MS produced its last copies of XP not long ago, id say its time to look ahead unless you have a very specific need that requires xp.

no, those stock mouse/keyboard settings are not good, id definately suggest picking your own up from a store where you can handle them and see what you like/need.

you should definately overclock because yes, its true the overall life will be shorter for your hardware, but in 3 years it will be time to upgrade again anyway, and DSO isnt agressive enough to have you die before then. even if you do, its under warranty.
as far as what you should OC, it depends entirely on the hardware and cooling you get. the best answer is OC whatever you can afford to.

its extremely difficult to get a level of sound across via the internet. it depends on you really, you have to decide if you think the extra power is worth a little air moving noise or not. its not like its going to bang and clang, its just like having a big desk fan on all the time. ive seen some say that its "so loud" and others say they dont even notice it.

as far as the video card, you will be best to get a final opinion from a dso tech.

500->320, definately

tweaking the OS means that they will configure everything they can to allow your OS to run the minimum required services/processes... allowing you the best overall performance. this is something you can definately do on your own if you are willing. its added as an option for convenience

im very much a fanboi of the quads, can never have too much power, and everyone minimizes during games these days. its worth it imo

g0 - its a revision of intels chips to allow for more aggressive overclocks

motherboard - the mobo is literally the last thing you should pick. only when you have everything else in line can you decide which mobo is best for you. i personally prefer asus but if you arent an overclocking enthusiast or using crossfire the difference is pretty negligible

I've just heard about a lot of problems with vista and a lot of good things about how stable and reliable XP pro is. I can't thank you guys enough for all the help you've given me, I really do actually appreciate it.

Thanks
