]Happily, another newbie. Have been traveling all summer, during which I found DS. Since that time, I have devoted a bunch of time thinking about my dream machine. Reading recent Configuration Discussions, I read rab8219’s words with interest and my situation is similar with a little bit less budget allowance….. Kelly helped me with a few pointed questions. Now, here’s what I’ve come up with. Can’t tell you guys how much I’d appreciate any input you’d like to offer. The current tab runs $3116 with plans for a new Samsung 245T S-PAV. as the much needed monitor. Here’s the machine I’m hoping DS will create: : Am concerned with heat dissipation. Liquid cooling is beyond my means. I have hopes that the Stage 3 cooling that I have chosen won’t introduce objectionable fan noise. The future location of the machine will be in Yuma, Arizona in an 8x10 closet-sized, (air conditioned when necessary) room. Leave for home next week. So, will place the order such that build time will take place while I’m traveling. It should arrive shortly after I arrive. Only my first child was met with such anticipation! |

Ticket number: 187608. Yes, primarily games. Dying to play Crisis, Bioshock, Orange Box et. al. that came out last year, but my computer couldn't handle 'em.
Now Far Cry 2 is coming out..........

That computer would be a beast, but there are a few things that could be dropped/changed.
Only get one DVD/CD drive unless needed. Drop the keyboard and mouse. Would probably be easier and cheaper to get it local. Liquid cooling would be a really wise move for your rig. Edited by Clinton - 04 Oct 2008 at 3:34pm |

LOL! Thank You! I guess the big surprise was the change of RAM back to 4GB. But with the other changes you made perhaps it was necessary to stay within cost boundaries. The planned monitor of a Samsung 245T is a 24" with 1950x1200 res. so your point of two GTX260's is well taken. Interesting too is your overclocking memory timing, thus adding cooling fan/s in lieu of Stage 3. Clifford's comments fit in with your as well. Wow. overclocking a 3Ghz Quad ought to REALLY give me a CPU powerhouse! I'm going to go with your ticket. Thank you so very much.........Russ |

Russ if you want that pc to be a beast do this:
here you go Ticket# 190658 --- Price: $3435 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis: Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Power Supply: 860W PC Power & Cooling (ESA Edition) (Dual SLI Compatible) Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache) Motherboard: nVidia 790i Ultra Core 2 Quad (nForce 790i Ultra SLI) (DDR3 Only) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz OCZ Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive 1: 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor (10K RPM) (16MB Cache) (Extreme Speed) Hard Drive 2: - No Thanks Raid Option: - No Thanks Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Wireless Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896MB (Includes PhysX Technology) TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: Liquid Chilled FrostBite CPU Only Internal Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Red Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Modifications: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Yes, Overclock the processor as much as possible with complete stability Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: Yes, Overclock memory timings (Includes Memory Fan Kit Installed) Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: Microsoft Multimedia Desktop 3.0 (Multimedia Keyboard + Optical Wheel Mouse) Mouse: - No Thanks my keyboard comes with a mouse External Storage: - No Thanks Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty the liquid cooling is more quiet and will get much better cooling, to be honest my first config should have the liquid cooling, because between 2 gpus and OC there is gonna be heat. the ram cut back has nothing to do with budget, it has to do with the fact that you wont' use it. this system you can expect to see oc speed of 3.8 to 4.0MHz if you drop the same system with liquid cooling to q9550 then you can expect 3.4 to 3.6MHz speed. you decide if its worth it to you |

Would sure lilke to grab this beast, but might have to phase it in gradually. I have followed your lastest suggestion and opted for a lesser CPU and liquid cooling for it. Clifford strongly supported liquid cooling as well. I remember reading in the past about weighting of CPU's vs Video Cards: In the absense of being able to have both being strong, it is better to have a weaker CPU and a strong video card, rather than vice versa. Can't tell you how neat it has been to go over this with you. Plan to set things rolling mid-week next with ticket #190665. I also found it informative to see you -DST4ME- change my hard drive to a 10K Raptor at the price of reducing the HD capacity. That's where experience that I don't have really pays off. Thanks again you guys......

sounds good, here is where you can start, get a 500GB drive only.
in a few month buy a Raptor and use the Raptor as your 1st HDD for OS/apps and game and take the 500GB and make it the second HDD for media/personal files. the move from 500GB to your new raptor will be very easy, all you do is clone the 500GB to the raptor and you are done when its time to do that let me know and I will walk you thru, again its very easy. This will allow you to save some moeny now and spend later. as for which is better, CPU or GPU, it has to be a balance, but current quad CPU can handle what ever you throw at it, so when you get to the q9xxx chips, the GPU becomes more important for gaming experience. Can't tell you how much pleasure it is to be able to discuss this stuff with you the q9550 will go just fine for you. also don't forget the new Intel chip is coming out next month Edited by DST4ME - 04 Oct 2008 at 5:39pm |

In view of your previous guidance, My thinking was, and will be, that I will go with the Raptor initially and later supplement it with a 500GB at 7200. I hadn't mentioned, that I plan to initially continue to operate my antique Dell Dimension 8200 (having been updated periodically) keeping my personal files functional until I can gradually phase them into the new machine. The biggest problem now is how to fit two machines as well as all other junk into that 8x10 closet! When I add the additional 500 GB you'll be hearing from me. I much appreciate the offer.....
