    Posted: 08 Jun 2010 at 5:01pm
Hello, I am new to the DS Forums, and I have been browsing the website for a while, and I am stuck on what to get!

I have a configuration I really like and i5 rig,
http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=41287
PRICE:$1,800

Also, I have an i7 rig customized,
http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=412327
PRICE:$1,931

I need help on what to get Processor-wise, because I am going to be running a single GPU, where i5 would be better for, but I want fast (1600) RAM, but i5 doesn't support it easily.

I am just looking for a gaming computer that will run games like "Half-Life 2" or "Battlefield: Bad Company 2"

I would like this rig to be below $2,000, and to preferably have an ATI Radeon 5870 Vapor-X Edition, but it doesn't really matter, because any video card will get the job done, as long it gets good fps'.

If any of you guys have any ideas on the rig i should choose, or even design one for me (lol) but I an just looking for a cost-efficient, gaming rig.

EDIT: What cooling should I get? Ive heard that the i5 Doesn't get as hot as other processors.

Thanks,
Austin

ALSO: I will edit the first post after,

I really don't care about the video card if it makes it any easier to recommend things, because it really doesnt matter. If it gets the job done, then its ok :D

this will more than fill your needs. if you really want an i5 it will probably fill your needs, but for the money you are spending, you might as well step it up to x58.

the 5870 is not worth it. for the $34 difference, you are much better off with the 480

Now with that build, should I get the "Disable and Tweak all of the non-crucial services in the OS"? Or will I be better off without it?

Why Windows 7 Pro? Is there any major difference between Home Premium and Professional?

Also, I dont need more than 500gb of hard drive space, but the 500gb only has a 16mb cache, while the 1tb has 32mb cache. What would be better? Is the cache really necessary?

Thanks,
Austin

the os tweak is kinda over the top in my personal opinion, youre better off not getting it, this way your "recovery disk" will come with normal windows, and you can make changes you want, but have the option of going back to default

the reason most suggest pro is becuase of "xp mode" supposively, this makes it much easier to run anything that you have that is much older, such as older games

there really wouldnt be much difference, especially for your purposes. its more about how much space you will fill up, you always want to have plenty of extra hdd space

Ok, thanks !ender_, I will probably buy the rig you suggested, but it won't be for a month or so, until i make the money necessary, but I like the idea of not having to upgrade my hard drive in the near future, so I will go with the 1TB hard drive (I mean, $40 more, why not?)

And as for the CD Drives, I will probably get a second, and are all of the parts compatible? But it doesn't matter right now, because digital storm tests each system, so...

Thanks!

Will a 750 Watt PSU be enough for the GTX 480?

Yes, that is plenty for a PC with a single GTX 480. But know that it isn't enough for two GTX 480s, so you won't be able to add a second one in the future to run in SLI. Not that this is too much of an issue you can just replace the single 480 with a better card some day down the road instead.

Yeah, I'm not going SLI any time soon :D I thought the 480 drew power by itself, just think of SLI...

So yeah, I will add the 2nd optical drive, and the 1TB hard drive.

Should I get the HAF-922 or -932? Ive seen reviews saying that the -932 doesn't have dust filters on the intake fans, but I wouldn't mind paying the extra amount for it

HAF-X has filters but don't think the HAF-X is really available yet we shall see, otherwise you can get a HAF 932 and order some DemCiflex Filters for it here

I know that the HAF-922 has filters, so does the HAF-X But the only HAF that doesn't is the -932. Sadly I like the -932 the best in looks, but I can get filters...

Im stuck. If anyone can post personal reviews of each case, that would be great :D

I mean, dust is bad for computers, but i can air-dust them, so I dont Know :O

id pick the 932, i just think the case is designed better personally, i mean.. an exhaust fan over the optical drives? =/

plus if youre really into filters, check out the panty hose mod on oc.net Smile it seems funny but appearently he got great results

dont get me wrong i love these forums but that oc.net has some real geniuses that laugh at the concept of "thinking outside the box".
they overclock the box, custom paint it, and cool it with liquid nitrogen

Not that I would recommend it, but yes. You can underclock most components.
