Ok, looking at various google searches and the comparisons on the website here are really not helping me choose a configuration.
I buy workhorse powerhouse computers that last me years. My last computer was purchased 4 years ago, and it ran every game of the time at 1600x1200 high. It was only last year that it began to run into issues, and I'm down to 1280x1024. My last computer had 400 gigs of storage, which was the best I could find at the time, and I ran out of that a long time ago. It also had the best CPU I could get at the time. Lastly, a large CRT display for maximum flexibility in resolutions. All of this has given me a computer that's lasted so many years doing office, programming, storage and gaming at fairly top notch for fairly cheap. It's an Alienware. I'd planned on buying my new one from Alienware again this year, but the rising prices and lowered configuration choices drove me to search for other sites. Found this one and was very impressed, especially when I built a computer for under 4k that Alienware couldn't match at nearly 6k. What I'm looking for this time around is more of the same - Multitasking ability, storage space, and longterm viability in gaming and productivity. I have several questions and several problems with my build. I used the configuration request form to send these questions in, but it's been three weeks with no answer. So I'm turning to the boards to get some help from the community and a few of the employees I see hovering around. I'm aiming for less than 6K. If I get it under 5K, I'll be buying with no reservations. My build: Specifications:My questions
Thanks all for any information or answers you can provide to the above. |

Couple things to note, you might need a 1200W power supply for duel GX2's as well with a lot of the high end goodies you have set up to go with it. You might wanna ask somebody with better knowledge though.
You already are aware that your version of windows probably wont use all those 4GB of ram so no need to talk about that.
Now to your questions:
The 9800GTX isnt out yet and is still under its NDA, so finding reliable information on it is pretty hard. There has been one review out for it.
Take it with a grain of salt though. What i do know is that a Gx2 is equal to or slightly above the power of duel 8800GTS 512 cards. So id expect that a SLI 9800GTX set up will be slightly above the performance of a single GX2 by how much I really cant say. The Quad GX2 will obviously beat even triple SLI 9800 just due to the extra core, but would it really be worth the money is the better question. I wanna lean towards no. But if you have the money the Quad GX2 will probably be the most muscle you can get for a while.
For the display, im honestly not a huge fan of Acer displays. The samsung might provide a decent display, but id say its probably best not to pick a monitor without doing some goodly amount of research on it first. Usually what i do is go to newegg.com and read reviews of various monitors in the areas of performance im looking for. Then I take a trip to my local best buy, or some other computer place and I take a look at the displays myself. As each person kinda has their own take on what is a nice display or not.
I personally use a 27.5 inch Hanns-G that i got from best buy. It only has a 800:1 contrast ratio, but i went to best buy and looked it over vs another LCD i was looking at a with a 1000:1 ratio and i honestly couldnt see that much of a difference with my eyeballs. Plus i got a hell of a deal that i just couldnt pass up for this thing. 439.99.
(p.s Watch out with samsung and other displays, they love to use "dynamic contrast ratio" which gives like ungodly numbers like 10000:1 I wish they would have a standard method over all displays)
Speakers i dont know anything about, ive never even had 4.1 speakers =/.

Not meaning to threadjack, but I think this is problem that DS really needs to address. Not answering configuaration requests is just begging customers to take their business elsewhere. I recommended DS to two of my friends in the 3 -4 weeks, they both sent in multiple configuaration requests and received no response. They both wound up going with AVA Direct and Maingear respectively....average amount spent by both buddies was $4,500. Two pretty significant sales that should have gone to DS.
Hope you get your questions answered Adrenfreak. Hang in there.

Yeah, me too. I'm guessing it's because the company got very popular and they're dealing with explosions of people hitting the configurator.
And wait - If the GTX isn't out yet, how is it in the configurator? |

1. The 9800GTX has yet to be released.
It appears, from the information leaked thus far, to be a simple
refresh of the 8800GTS with a 25MHz bump in clock speed and a second
SLI connection to enable tri SLI in a sub $400 card. The reality is,
the 9 series looks more like a refresh than a genuine push forward in
technology. A single 9800x2 is roughly the equivalent of running 2
8800GTS in SLI if this helps in your analysis of cost to benefit. As far as the appearance of a yet to be released card, perhaps to allow for pre-orders. Edited by Tyler Lowe - 29 Mar 2008 at 5:10pm |

Here's another friendly bump for you.
![]() Adren, if you have not done so already, give DSO a call with any further questions. They do try to respond to forum posts, but most of their time on the forums seems to be spent with technical help rather than configuration advice. Hopefully, this post does get answered, but your best bet by far is the phone, or a PM to a DSO staff member. |

Every configuration request that comes are way is reviewed and replied to. It's mainly the Digital Storm replies being sent to SPAM.
It's best to check the SPAM/Junk Mail folders as we have had many cases where they would fall into that hole. Another solution is to simply include a phone number so our staff may speak to you about your configuration.

Tyler Lowe hit the ball on all four questions. 1. You should go with an SLI setup of two 9800GTX video cards. If you want real power, you should go with two 8800GTX video cards. The 9800GX2 video card(s) are great, but, they are not really a good choice for putting them in a 2x (Quad-SLI) setup.
2. LCD displays have come a long way. I personally was in the same situation before, but, I have a Samsung 24" display, and it's great!
3. The Logitech speaker set is great, however, Klipsch is a far better brand in audio. They are obviously more pricey than Logitech and if you are an audiophile, stick with Klipsch.
4. Yes, we can do that. Simply request that in the order comments box in the checkout process (billing details page).
Give us a call if you have any further questions, or shoot me a PM. Edited by Alex - 01 Apr 2008 at 2:50am |

I'll answer the technical part in a second, but I'm in a meeting - Quick question, what's the domain that the responses come from?

Ok, work and the flu got in the way of me getting anything done with this, but now I'm back in the saddle and tired of waiting for things to load and watching my hard drive capacity drop below 100 gigs total.
I basically took all the comments here, and went back to the drawing board - I also wanted to see if any configurator changes had taken place. I found some much better articles finally that enabled me to see the difference between GTX and GX2. I still waffle a bit between getting one GX2 over two GTX's. I could always plug in a second GX2 a year from now and gain insane power. Anyone have a thought/suggestion on that? I also took the monitor out - I have a nice 21" CRT, and I need to head somewhere and look at LCD's in action for awhile before I buy. I'm basically breaking my tradition of buying a huge machine and doing no upgrades at all for awhile. Here's my final build. I'm pushing buy this week, come hell or high water. Errr, I live in northern Illinois on a lake, and the water is rising, bad way to say that. Anyone out there have any comments on it that I should think about? Last quick note - the area up here gets fairly warm in the summer, and my house is somewhat aged - Even with the AC on, I sometimes push high 70s in the summer. With that in mind, will the level 3 air cooling do ok?
