The last time I bought a computer was at CompUSA and it was a HP multimedia center. It lasted pretty well- about 6 years but now I am wanting to spoil myself some on a new rig. I'm doing little research here and there trying to figure out what is good and what is really unneeded. I've been debating, what is the best card to use with air cooled, or is LC the way to go these days. As for the games I am running, this is for games like GTA IV, Crysis (my old pc could run it on low and I have been dying to see it with the graphics cranked all the way up), Far Cry 2, World of Warcraft, and Empire Total War, which I wanted to get after I got a better machine. My room has a temp of about 60-80 on average year round. My budget right now is going to be around $5000. So far my configuration looks like this.....does it look ok?

Yeah i see some issues. U got 1 HD and 2 optical drives so youre wasting cash there. THen u have the stage 2 over clock and u have the AIR cooling so u cant do that unless u go stage 3 Frostbite and if u go LC u dont need the LED fan upgrade its lust gonna be 72$ gone down the drain. ( also the HAF comes with 1 stock red LED u might wanna replace that one) The only other thing is the video card u really dont need the 295 for the 24 inch , but besides that 2x GTX 275 will give u the better performamce and i wouldnt oc the Video card its gonna make your system way 2 hot for such little extra performance. Other wise ure good unless u want to go with the velociraptor instead of the TB the TB is way 2 much back up u wont need it.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of going lower on resolution, but I will go 1920 x 1200 ....I think thats the max they go right now. Whats a good monitor to go with?
Instead of 2 optical drives and a TB drive maybe one optical and 2 300GB drives? Edited by cronic22 - 29 May 2009 at 1:33am |

A couple questions, what do you need two optical drives for and what do you need 600GBs for? I'm not trying to make a point, just serious questions.
And about the monitor, I'm going to go with HP 2159m I don't own it yet but its a good HD monitor for the price. |

my current pc has 2 optical drives.lol i just thought that was normal. and same about the hard drive, i was listening to a friends advise. but he said go alienware, which was how i found DSO cause i heard some great reviews, and i was never a huge fan of alienware.
this is all new for me, so i am really grateful to everyone here. |

yeah i was gonna say dont waste you cash LC the gpu's unless you're OC them; I believe those GTX's have a water cooling block or something in them already.my only question now is y do you need the red LED fan upgrade. there 1 stock Led red fan in the HAF, and u have red LC and internal lighting. I still think the fans are overkill. the only other thing is with the 4.0 -4.2 OC on the 920 from what i seen the 920's get temps over 82 degress celcius on avg when OC above 3.7 im not 100% postive but i think you loaded temps are gonna be high

@ inferno: Fail. GTX's do not have a 'water cooling block', they do have a nice heatpipe system though.

IMO, you should go with a regular HDD and then upgrade later to an SSD when the prices go down.

Sigh, if I had a nickle for every LC maintenance related question I see.
Liquid cooling in not as big of a hassle as everyone makes it out to be. The fact is LC requires more maintenance then air cooling, and this seems to scare people. However keep in mind that this is in comparison to "Air cooling" which requires almost NO maintenance what so ever. apart from keeping dust levels down.
To answer you're question more directly. in order to check to see weather or not you need to add liquid is to open up the case and look. if it looks like its getting low then you top it off. Theres really no wrong way of doing it, you can do it more or less often then you wish. just so long as you don't let it run out lol.

Cronic, keep in mind that while 4.0 GHz is nice, it is possible that keeping your CPU at that high of an OC permanently MAY reduce the life of the CPU. Alot of people that OC that high do so only temporarily, simply to see if they can achieve that speed and make it stable. Fun stuff. Then they turn it back down into the 3.x Ghz range for normal everyday operation. Not alot to gain between 3.5 Ghz and 4.0 Ghz in most games anyway. Games like those are more highly GPU dependant. LCing is sweet though whatever you decide. As B@d says, maintenance isn't that big of an issue with LCing just the CPU. |

you just check the reserviour once a month and if the level is low you just un-velcro it and add liquid and then put it back on velcro. OCing a 920 to 4.2GHz is not high at all, a high oc for the 920 is like 5.0GHz
I know lot of people with over 4.0GHz oc and I don't know once person that turned their oc back to 3.5 or something like that. Edited by DST4ME - 30 May 2009 at 4:09am |

it does but the LC system used here does not have the reservoir installed there. but still you have to open the side door real quick to check the level, while there just grab it and add some liquid.

Thanks to all of you for your input and for helping me get my mess of a start sorted out. What I thought was going to be difficult to do was really quite simple. Just needed some direction. Now just gotta wait a couple weeks to get the money together and I can make a final decision :)

You sould check out the post I put here http://www.digitalstormonline.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=7002 . It';s a htbrid of a dual pump but I get good temps. I am sure DS can do this. In fact I saw another post with a similar setup.
Oh, It does use the the top fill port built into the HAF.
