Topic: Configuration Posted: 11 Apr 2011 at 2:09pm |
I plan on buying a 27/30 inch screen, I saw a Dell27' inch monitor that was roughly 1100$. But I'm not too sure if it was an IPS monitor. As much as I would like to wait on the new SB CPU's.. I really need to get a new computer. I have no budget, but I'm trying to keep it under 7000$.. ( I was actually thinking of going with the SR-2 Xeon build, but couldn't justify to myself why I needed that much ). I'm not fully dedicated to a 2600k build, because I do use Sony Vegas, and 3d Max Studio alot. This is a 2600k build configuration that I'm thinking of buying soon.
Monitor without IPS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236101 I went with Corsair RAM ( I know DST says RAM don't matter, but I'd rather have a brand name on mine for +17$ more). 520201 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master 942 HAF X Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe (Intel P67 Chipset) (New & Improved B3 Revision Without SATA 3G Issue) System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Dominator DHX (High-Performance) Power Supply: 1000W Corsair (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 2x (120GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: 320 Series SSDSA2CW120G3K5) Set 1 Raid Options: - Raid 0 Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1002FAEX) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: 1x (500GB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD5002AALX) Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 6: Sub-Zero LCS Dual Loop: CPU & Dual SLI/CrossFire Video Cards H20 Tube Color:Red Tubing with High-Performance Fluid (UV Lighting Reactive) Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 4.0GHz to 4.5GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty Edited by zangetsu - 11 Apr 2011 at 3:22pm |

If the monitor you're talking abotu is the Dell UltraSharp U3011, than yes it is definitely an IPS panel monitor. That being said, if you're going to buy this monitor I'm sure you know it has a native resolution of 2560x1600. This resolution is pretty taxing. The SLI/580 setup is pretty beefy but you might want to consider crossfiring 6970's for the added VRAM. The extra RAM will help you system alot if you actually plan on gaming at 2560x1600.
Also, since you budget allows for it, you may want to consider 3 cards instead of two. Edited by Aroberts0820 - 11 Apr 2011 at 2:59pm |

Ya, I was looking at the native resolution. I also don't remember the 30 inch being 1500$... unless my memory is just bad. I could have sworn they were 1100$ for a 30inch .. oh well. I'm still torn between a 27 inch, and a 30 inch. I still can't decide.

In my opinion if you have the money go for it. The difference is huge. Again, when you go for the larger resolution you sort of need to beef up your video cards. Just be warry of the overhead cost. If your total budget is 7000, you should be able to get the monitor and still have enough for a state-of-the-art overkill death-machine.

I would go with the Dell UltraSharp U3011 30"
and then wait for the x78 platform to get out, otherwise for that monitor and sli ability, you need to go with the old x58 platform. I would change a few things with your build, but I like to get your answer on what you want to do as far as what I mentioned above, but first thing I would change, if you want LC on cpu and gpu then I would put you in the hailstorm. |

I will most likely get that monitor DST, aren't the rumors that the x78 will be out q4 of this year?
If the x78 isn't out by q3, then I'll probably be pulling the trigger on buying soon. Still researching, why would you want to opt for a x58 platform over a p67? Resolution?

For that res I like the 6970 cf better, for that res, I also like the ability to go tri cf, and for tri cf we need the x78, and yes Q4 is the rumors.
rest looks good, just don't forget the ram fan, I would also drop the 500GB. Now you sure you want raid ssd for HDD1? |

In my past experiences, I've always had Raid 0. I know SSD's are fast... its still up in the air though honestly. I'm still rockin some WD Velociraptors atm in my old system on raid 0.

VRs were great but not for the price, a ssd is a no brainer, but ya I got some VRs still going too, I think most of us have one somewhere lol.
So then if you know what you are getting into with raid, then keep the raid. Edited by DST4ME - 12 Apr 2011 at 3:39am |

So if you were wanting to buy soon, I'm guessing you would go with a x58 platform for tri SLI/CF?

To be honest, there is no way I would not wait for the x78, specially with your budget, whatever you buy right now, will be slow comparing to the chips coming this Q4.
I can't spend that much money on something that is already old, but thats just me Edited by DST4ME - 12 Apr 2011 at 3:45am |

I don't think I can wait much longer. LoL my old system just isn't cutting it anymore. I may just stick to x2 6970's in CF.

If you call the Dell sales center you can haggle the prices. I got 400 bucks knocked off my 30 inch by spending half an hour on the phone. They will initially tell you that the only way to reduce the price is to get a line of dell credit, but dont give in, I refused a credit line and still got the better price...

I don't understand. How did you haggle? Did you just say "Hey, can I get this monitor for less money?"If that works I'll be buying one very soon :D |

Haggling is an art unto itself, and it took me some time to get descent at it, but basically yes that was the idea yes. It also depends on the person you are dealing with. It doesnt always work...
At the time I was looking into 30' monitors the hp was several hundred less than dell so I used that to my advantage. Edited by JStones - 13 Apr 2011 at 8:51pm |

AT sears for $1271.99, free shipping
do a bit of search and you might even find it cheaper, or wait for a coupon or sale from dell. Edited by DST4ME - 14 Apr 2011 at 2:13am |

Definitely keep an eye out for coupon discounts for the Dell U3011, I've seen them pretty often around the time I got mine, which I got for $1125 straight from Dell. Also watch for discounts from the "Small Business" side of Dell, sometimes they'll have coupon discounts for that instead of the normal consumer site. It's the same monitor, you'd just have to make up a fake small business name if you order it from the business version of the site.
Also you could probably use the fact that they often have those discounts as leverage if you try to barter the price down, saying that you just missed a recent sale or something. |

Where would you obtain said coupon? Or is this just a discount that they apply on the site?

The one from sears I posted is just priced like that, no need for anything, I believe they are authorized dealer so all dell warranty applies.(but double check to be sure).
otherwise some times they put them on sale, other times you need to search the net for coupons for them. |

Just ordered mine. Won't be home for a few weeks tho... on vacation visiting the girlfriends family.
Ordered it off of newegg, specifically for RMA purposes. 1300$ not too shabby. Edited by zangetsu - 16 Apr 2011 at 6:44am |
