Howdy guys, coming back from Afghanistan in a few weeks and in the market for a new computer. I was very lucky to find this site and I love their outlook on customer service and build quality. The display will be 24", I believe the native resolution for it is 1920X1080. Most games i play are fps rts and a bit of wow thrown in. From doing a bit of reading wow does not play nice with sli but I guess from turning it off its runs well. OK on with the config.
Ticket Number: 286558I guess its a pretty standard build around here. I would change the warranty to 5 years on second look but other than that i think im pretty close. What if any is the difference between 285 and 275. Im guessing 285 is better for bigger resolutions, but where is the cut off at? Any input would be awsome as im still pretty new to all this. My budget is around 3500. Thanks guys. |

From what I know, the 275 is the best for the money so I would stick with that, I wouldn't go with the LC on the CPU, you're better off with air cooling and finally, (unless you really need that much room) I would get rid of the 1TB drive IMO. But this all doesn't matter if you want to spend all 3500$,.

it is true that the GTX275s are best performance for you're money. the 285s preform about 5-8FPS (frames per second) faster at the most, but normally not even that.
I would go with at least two 500GB drives rather then one 1TB. The 1TB drives are kinda a pain to keep clean, and take FOREVER to virus scan.
I would however recommend liquid cooling for the CPU, it is the best cooling option you can get! however if you wanted/needed to go with Air for whatever reason then the "Noctua NH-U12P" is a great air cooler.
The only other thing, I would think about changing the 1600 RAM to the 1333. Only because there is no noticeable performance difference between the two.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I'm pretty sold on liquid cooling atm, Ive had a few roommates with them installed and know of the maintence that goes into them and it shouldnt really be a problem for me. Changed the terabyte to 2 500 gigs, as well changed the ram to 1333. Now if i went with the high clocked ram say 2000 would i really notice a difference, would it be worth it? Im still split on the 285/275 issue. If i did go with a 275s over 285s would it be that much of a difference to upgrade sooner than I would have if i would have gone 285? Thanks again for the comments guys.

I would just change your ram to 6GB 1333 mushkin.
you might want to just go with a 500GB as HDD1 and then toward the end of the year when ssd prices are better, upgrade to a ssd as HDD1 and push the 500GB to HDD2 |

yeah i think i will end up upgrading the hard drive later on down the road so switching to 500g for HD1 and removing HD2 atm makes sense to me. Any word on how much the price will actually drop on the ssd's?

Haha what a small world :) I was Army when I was in Bagram, but that was 2003-2004. Now I'm out and doing the civilian contractor thing, working out here with the Marines. I must say, I like this side of deployments MUCH better lol

Hey now, I did my time! lol. I was deployed for about 42 months with the Army, mixed up between Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Iraq. They were about to send me back again, so I just decided to get out and come back to make some real money this time around.

sorry alkaline I have no clue how much the prices might drop, our hope is that the newer faster ssds come out this year and H1 of 2010 will drop the prices on the older ones.

OK after educating myself a bit more on ram speeds, yeah i think it was a waste to go for 1600 when the 1333mhz is an option. But in reading all the information on them 2000mhz has my attention now. I assume the EVGA x58 will support 2000 Mhz memory ( looking into as i post this, if it dosent i will settle on 1333mhz). Requested a fan on the memory as well. I did change the Video cards to 285 in sli. My reasoning behind this is i do think they might make it a little longer before i eventually upgrade the cards. Again thanks for the replys and here is the most recent build:

I'm a bit confused, what does upgrading later have to do with 285? bottom line the difference between a 275 and 285 is 5 fps, once you are talking about going sli, the difference becomes even less noticable cause you gonna be over the 60 fps.
the reason we recommend the 275 is because the 285 is a waste of your money. going with 2000MHz is also a waste of your money. if you pay more for something and can't tell the difference in performance, then you are wasting your money. you would have a hard time telling the difference in perfromance between that system and this system: here you go Ticket# 286576 --- Price: $3035 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $2885 Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 3X SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports Triple SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1333MHz Mushkin (Highly Recommended) (Digital Storm Certified) Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition) Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 896MB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 3: High-Performance Liquid Chilled FrostBite System For CPU Liquid Color:Red: Non-conductive High-Performance Fluid (Requires H20: Stage 3 Cooling Package) Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Red) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Requires Air Cooling Upgrade) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: Memory Fan Kit Only (Does not include memory overclocking service) Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 5 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty (Highly Recommended) Edited by DST4ME - 25 May 2009 at 6:53am |

yup thanks DST4ME i think thats what i am going with(275s and 1333 mhz). With the upgrading later part I was thinking if I had better card(s) now that it will postpone me upgrading later down the road for a bit longer than the 275 and thus leading to a better card later. But in thinking about it its an endless cycle that will never end :( lol. So yeah it wont make the slightest of differences on the whole.

I haven't had a new desktop in a very long time either. Last one i got was for freshman year in college and that was 04. Yeah I think ill do a step by step review. From opening to actually pushing the power button. I figure it maybe can help some other people, as other reviews have been very helpful for me.

That sounds like a good idea.
On a less important note; are you an officer, or just one of the very few unfortunate enlisted with a colledge education? hehe

Nope newly promoted E-5. The officer thing really didn't appeal to me as i did ROTC in college for 3 years was very close to getting a direct commission, but that contract among other things didn't look so hot. Looooong contract and I mainly joined to serve the country do my part and get out as corny as that sounds.

Yeah, that is a great rig!
DDR3 ram is so fast that 1333 is really all you need for gaming. The only time you would notice a performance difference with the higher speed RAM is when looking at benchmarks, and even then its minimal. Its not like in the days of DDR2 where you tried to get the fastest RAM you could.
Same thing with the GTX285s you would only notice a difference on benchmarks. In the real world you'd never tell.
