Confused about order stages

So as far as I remember the email describing the stages of an order, it included something like,

Stage 2: All your parts are put into a bin
Stage 4: Machine is built

My order is in the middle of Stage 5, testing, and I got a call saying the HD I wanted is out of stock. Now, don't take this as a complaint, they offered me a practically identical drive for pretty much the same price, so I didn't really care. But I'm just curious how a part could just now be found out of stock since the machine's already been in testing since the 11th.

my guess would be, and i dont know the stages, that hdds get picked/tested last since compared to mobo, ram, processor, video card, and power supply, thier performance is pretty easy to gauge
so everything i listed is probably tested on benches, then they add your specific hdd to put it together
 
never was a fan of the stage idea though i think its somehting that seems cool but gets read too much into

Our testing practice is very dynamic. If we don't have a hard drive in stock, we may use a temporary one just to test your hardware in the mean time.
