I thought I knew what I was looking for until I started reading the many posts on here!  Now I'm completely confused.  Aging Dell 8200 and Dell 4100 both need to be replaced - very soon!  First: 8200 replacement possibility - corrections/suggestions/thoughts please?

Enthusiastic gamer - but currently only Rise of Nations/Legends, mainly because I can't run the others without impossible slow downs.  Not even AD1701.  No interest in WoW, etc.  Have Samsung SyncMaster 215TW.  Quite happy with two silly little desktop speakers (and subwoofer).  Room temperature is at both extremes - hot in summer and cold in winter.  Also (being near the french doors) it gets quite dusty.  Not looking for, nor can afford, top of the line, but don't mind replacing the odd card or two as the system gets older.

What have I done wrong/could do better:

This actually looks like a killer "not quite top of the line" machine; actually overkill for the types of games you mentioned. Unless you're a Crysis, Oblivion, COD4 type game player, I'd drop the second video card for now. Also, SLI is primarily for high resolution displays. What's the native res of the 215TW?

I'd add a second HD. I'd drop the second optical drive unless you do a lot of disk copying. On the other hand the optical drives are dirt cheap. Same goes for the floppy drive.

You might want to add one or more extra fans if you keep the SLI setup in a PRO case.

Thank you so much!  I'd love to play Oblivion - it's been sitting here, unplayable, since the day I bought it.  Native res of the 215TW is 1680 x 1050.  So I should drop the second video card?

I have 2 8800 GT on a 20 inch monitor with the same resolution.. when I take out the other card I notice a big fps drop no matter what game I play.  I play COD4 Maxed out with one card at 1680 resolution and the game is still very playable, couldnt tell you an exact FPS as I forgot

I'd say your situation is border line, but since I never play games above 1280x1024, I'll defer to Solo's experience.

Oblivion looks amazing on a modern machine. You'll love it.
