I've had my digital storm rig for a couple of years and love it. One problem though is that it puts out so much heat it raises the temp in my office about 5-10 degrees depending on time of day.

I've identified that the video card is the biggest contributor to temp (and noise) in my rig.

Since it's a couple of years old I thought I'd see if there was something out now that would better suit my use case and provide similar performance for what I do with the box while being cooler and quieter than the existing card.

My current card is a gtx 480 with 1.5gb ram

I have dual 22 in monitors at 1600x1200 and use it primarily for web, games (civ 5, mmo's), and watching streaming videos on Netflix and Hulu.

Any recommendations? The guy at frys was suggesting a 2 gb gtx 550 but he also suggested at one point about 6 other cards. Not sure he really knew anything.

Its kinda the price you pay for modern cards, they put out a lot of heat and noise. Unless you plan on going for liquid cooling to eliminate noise, its gonna be warm and noisy no matter what.

You could turn down the fan on the card but that means more heat.

Hi Trev....    To follow up on Kaleilar's advice, here's a link comparing the gtx 470, which is the same in noise and heat to the gtx 480, to the new gtx 660Ti.  The heat is less but is still gonna build over time.

The gaming is tons better, the noise about the same and the heat also alot better.  I wouldn't go lower than the 660Ti for gaming with room to grow.  The 670 or 680 if budget allows is tops.

Use the link to compare other cards.   The new Kepler cards, gtx 660ti, 670, 680, are great performers with less heat output.  And use less power as the chart shows.

Hope this helps.

Hi Trev,

The 470/480 was a poor design for NVIDIA. They put out a bunch of heat. Get a 680 and you will see a reduction in heat. The bad news is if you are going to game it still puts out heat, just not as much. Any gaming machine will create heat.

If you have a small office the computer will warm it up. If you want to beat that you need to address the cooling of the office. More than likely your house thermostat is in a different room and your AC doesn't know about the heat in your office. This is a common problem. Think about a window AC in the office. Or do something with fans that will move the warm air out the door. If you use a fan you might want to crack a window to provide cool air.

Thanks for the tips! I'll take a look at a 680. I'm at a definite disadvantage because I live in texas, my office has both southern and eastern exposure, and it is the farthest room from the thermostat and the air handler in our house.

I've thought about using a box fan to push the heat out a window or out the door. Might try that.

Thanks a lot! This is exactly what I was looking for. Seems to be about a 30% reduction in heat. awesome.

Hi Trev,

If you can open a window and have your box fan blowing out the window it will draw a lot of the hot air out of the room. A high fan blowing out of the top of the window will help the most. Open the door and the cooler air from the house will be drawn into the room if the fan is blowing outside. You will just have to experiment to see what works best in your circumstances.

Keep us posted on your progress.
