Have a 3yo DS system and the custom cooling loop began to leak. Planning to rip it out...replace the video cards with an upgrade and put at air cooler (or AIO) on the CPU. Any suggestions on what's out there that will fit with the existing backplate?

AFIK, there are not multiple standards for backplates. It would tie the manufacturers in knots. The Noctua air coolers, while huge, are top-notch.

Sorry you are having issues with the loop. Since you have decided to take it out, an AIO would be the easier replacement. The Noctua, while very efficient, is also very large and the RAM sticks have to fit under it. Keep us posted.

Oh, good catch on the RAM issue, hose! I'd completely forgotten about that. Some RAM modules are really tall to look (and be) cool these days.

Some Noctuas have a notch in the cooling fins to fit the RAM sticks but some sticks will not even fit under these.

If you can track down the leak then it might be a very cheap and easy thing to fix. If you are set on getting rid of the custom loop, I’d go with an AIO for the cpu. They are just as easy to install as air coolers and almost any AIO will outperform all but best air coolers (plus, they are quieter and take up less space. That said, I have heard the high end Noctua air coolers are very good and people get decent overclocks with good thermal paste and proper mounting pressure.
I recently replaced my cheap 120mm AIO/thermal pad with a 240mm AIO (corsair H100i pro) with grizzly kryonaut paste and was able to increase my prime95 stable overclock from 4.6Ghz to 5.0Ghz and at 5.2Ghz its stable enough to do anything except pass a tough stress test! |
