Hey....um....what would you say are the average heat tolerance limits for the Core i7 920? I'm reading people having temps of 55 C, mine at system minimal use is ~80 C....DS overclocked it, stable so far though.

need this info first

1. what is being used to "load" the CPU?
2. what is being used to report temps?

you say minimal use and it is at 80C? that is way too high.

Intel spec 67.2C I think, at T case, which is about 82C as Real temp reads it, for 24/7 opperation.. Most feel keep it under 85C.. I have seen instability over 85C with high overclocks, and also keeping it cooler will always make it last longer.

Monitors include nVidia System Monitor and CPUID's derived HWMonitor. Both report similar temperatures, though HWMonitor seems more accurate.

Loaded it with a lot of applications running that normally run when I have it on. CPU usage is 0~5%. Apps include monitors (BFN Dashboard, HWMonitor, nVidia Sys Mon.), instant messaging x3, and EVGA precision, a DL manager, antivirus, and that's about it. Right now, 30 minutes after startup, it's 75 C. After running for a couple of hours, it stabilizes at 80C. Then again, my area is currently receiving a lot of heat, but having this temp while others report 50C is somewhat troubling. However, the CPU has NEVER died on me because of heat-failure. Still concerned though.

Loading the CPU with Hyper Pi, a variant of Super Pi running on multiple threads, on 7 threads out of 8, the CPU usage obviously rockets up, the temperature rocketing up to 90~98 celsius with all cores. Giving it 5 minutes to cool down, it stabilizes again at ~78 C. I still find that disturbing....o_o....the system does NOT crash however, it just naturally slows down/lags because of the single available thread.

realtemp reports 75~85 idle.

have had 3 weird crashes in the past few days. first, one program would freeze or stop responding. after allowing it more than 5 minutes to respond, i would attempt to fire up Task Manager. which fails. then I would start moving my mouse and using num/caps/scroll lock to confirm windows was still running. after that, I would check if any programs were still responding. they would respond. then would lock up like the first. eventually, explorer would proceed to freeze after hitting around the desktop/taskbar, forcing me to hard reset.

Minimum temp - 76C, 75C, 76C, 74C

Maximum ~ 100C, 100C, 98C, 100C

After struggling to move my bedframe, designed by the most retarded, idiotic, stupid, freaking RETARDED person in the world, I managed to reseat the cooler. I think i may have loosened it by accident once, since now the CPU idles at 60 C. still really pissed off about the moron who designed my bedframe though.
