if the budget allows,no question go i7.. if the budget does not allow, the 860 is a good chip, and will make a decent PC.

the i5 is good. the i7 is better.

there will never be the 'best' processor b/c there will always be a new 1 coming out soon. it's inevitable.

if you go with i5 or i7 that run on p55 platform, down the road you can't upgrade the cpu for dirt cheap, which is like getting a new faster pc for fraction of a cost of a pc.

if you go with i7 on x58 platform you can upgrade the cpu.

I would go with the 920.

From what I gathered it was to crank the Ghz to 4.4 and still be stable.

My question would be why?  What would be the advantage of giving up HT in favor of squeezing out that last few (relatively) mhz?  Some special application or something?

with windows XP, HT off will result in better performance, with windows Vista, most apps see a very slight gain with HT on, some a slight loss, and very few, a nice gain. With windows 7 HT on will result in a decent gain across the board.  So as the OS mature, they are getting more optimized for hyper threading. So if you are running Vista at 4.Ghz with HT on, or 4.4Ghz with HT off, overall you will prolly be better off with HT off. With windows 7, I would always use HT on.

Ah, I see.

I guess HT isn't as impressive as I thought it was.

Then again, I'm still stuck in P4 HT thinking, my current comp.  If you only have 1 core to begin with, I guess it's more important.

HT on the i7 is much improved over the HT on the P4, there are some apps that see 70% gains with HT.
HT is pretty impressive to me, what is holding it back is the OS and the apps.
I gained 40% more FPS in Crysis warhead with having HT on, in widows 7, with all other settings the same.... That is a massive gain if you ask me. This was done on a pretty demanding system, I don't know about results on a more typical setup. Ouch

Now that I think of it, I guess I never had my HT turned off.  I simply went from a PII to a P4 with HT.

And yeah, I would say 40% qualifies as massive gain.  Pretty cool.

Still waiting as patiently as possible for my new rig, then I can see what an i7 can do.

it is gonna be night and day compared to your p4 and tour gonna wonder why you didn't spend that $$$ sooner lol.

i went from a pentium m to a core duo in april (cheap $600  dell comp Winkfrom microcenter since mine died and i needed something to hold me over.) and i was very impressed. your going to see much bigger benefits then i did and you are going to be a pig in shyt.
