Hi John... A couple of places you can save some $$, is to go with the i5-4690k cpu and a gtx 970.
The i5 doesn't have the hyper threading of the i7, but for gaming, it really isn't used much. The i7-4790k does have a higher base and turbo clock speed, but with the added oc'ing, doesn't really matter. The gtx 980 is about %15 better frames, give or take and game dependent, but the gtx 970 is best bang for the buck, dollar to performance. Plus, if you go sli 970, with your single monitor, its all you need for sure. The rest is good in my book. Hope this helps and good luck. |

You could consider the Vanquish level 4 for $1399. It has the i5-4690k and a sli motherboard. It does have a smaller SSD and psu. The 600 watt psu could be an easy upgrade to a 750w psu or better if you ever go sli, which you might not with your single 1080p monitor.
Just a thought. Here's a comparison between the 970 and 980... http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1355?vs=1351 Edited by bprat22 - 16 Mar 2015 at 9:00am |

Thanks for the help bprat22, I need to think about it.
The vanquish case is it easy to clean the dust out of the case? It looks like the corsair case is easier to do maintenance. |

They're both Corsair cases, but the Slade 550 d , I believe, is easier to pull the front filter to clean. The Vanquish , Corsair 230t, needs to have the front panel removed to get to the filter.
As far as cleaning the inside, they are both easy to get into. Just remove the left side panel. |

I am leaning towards the 550D case. I like the looks of the case.
Here is my final configuration Configuration Code: 1163883 Total Price with Instant Savings: $2,172.00 Direct Load URL: https://www.digitalstormonline.com/configurator.asp?id=1163883 Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Corsair Obsidian 550D Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i5 4690K 3.50 GHz (Codename Devils Canyon) (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z97X-SLI (Intel Z97 Chipset) System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 850W EVGA SuperNOVA Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (256GB Samsung 850 PRO) Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (1TB Western Digital - Black Edition) Storage Set 3: - No Thanks <br><strong></strong> RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB (Includes PhysX) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D15 (Extreme Performance) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Fans: Upgrade All Fans to Corsair Airflow Performance Edition (Up to 6 Fans) Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: Noise Suppression Package Stage 1 (Optimized Airflow & Fan Speeds Only) LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock CPU 4.0GHz to 4.4GHz Boost Graphics Card(s): - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows CD) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Portable Gaming: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) I was wondering which is more quite and more efficient in cooling the case? 1. 120 mm water cooled option or the Noctua air cooled. There is not much of price difference. 2. I plan on adding a second 970 gpu in the future. How would one go about adding a second 970 gpu to the motherboard? What would be the procedure? Or is it better to add 2 970 gpus to the configuration? |

Here's one of many bench tests comparing the various cooler....
http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4228/corsair_hydro_series_h80_high_performance_liquid_cpu_cooler_review/index7.html The H80 in the test would be comparable to the 120mm cooler here. The H80 liquid cooler , in this test, is about 2-3 degrees better under load, but a lot noisier. As you lower the H80 fan speed to lower the noise the difference in temps is very close, but the H80 is still a lot noisier. The D14 is very quiet and performs right up there with the H80. The only drawback to Noctua D14 is its size for some. This bench is pretty typical but there are variances. To add another gtx 970, you just plug it into the Pciex16 slot, connect the sli bridge that should be in your accessory box , connect the two power connectors from the psu harness and tell it in Nvidia Control Panel to go sli. Others that have reviewed the Slade 550d case on the forums have said it was quiet with the 120mm rad. They had no problems. The case itself does a good job in sound deadening and DS might tweak the fans down, also. Edited by bprat22 - 16 Mar 2015 at 11:54am |
