Hey All

It's been over a year since I was looking to upgrade my system (on this site mind you) and at that time I was quite up to date with the ins and outs of the technology.  Unfortunately, now I'm not so sure so I could use a bit of help in putting together a system.  I play in 1900x1200 resolution and play a good mix of MMOs and RTS games.  I've got a budget around $3500 to play with.

DST will be by sooner or later to save you some money I would guess.  Your build looks okay to me, but you might want to shell out the bucks for a second hard drive.

I think the general mantra for gaming is:

hdd 1 small, fast (ssd)
hdd 2 big, slower (hdd)

Ok

1 - The bluray player was simply an option since an ever growing portion of my movie collection is on bluray and it would allow me to watch them on my computer not a necessity but a luxury.

2 - Motherboard - My old computer is 7 years old and I tend to ride them into the ground before upgrading.  Seeing as that'st the case should I consider a mobo with the new usb and sata technologies?  I see you changed my selection to an evga board.

3 - HD - I guess I was looking to do the SSD right off the bat as opposed to having to spend the money on one later.  You seem to disagree.  Why??  Is there supposed to be a drop in price in the near future (6 months)? or is the technology about to take another leap that I should hold off??

4 - OS - What is the philosophy behind Win 7 Professional over the Win 7 Premium??

This is exactly the kind of input I was hoping for thanks for the help.

My pleasure

1. well if you have a use for it then add it back or add it yourself later.

2. the mobos that have sata 3.0 and usb 3.0 are not where they need to be, the mobos that will have real sata 3.0 and such will come out hopefully end of this year or H1 one of next year. the current boards are not real sata 3.0, as in if you try and use the sata in 3.0 mode you will gimp the speed of the pci lanes. Any mobo cna have the same usb 3.0 and sata 3.0 with a usb 3.0/sata 3.0 card.

in short go with evga, you are not getting the real version of new technology yet, hopefully by the time the new mobos with real sata 3.0 and usb 3.0 come out, they will also have pci 3.0 too.

3. the intel you have picked is not available as on option on the budget sections, which means we have to go to blackops, if we do, the same exact config you see above will cost about $200 or so more, blackops is more expensive because it gives more options. So its either you go with the corsair ssd 256GB (only ssd option in budget section) or you by it like I posted and then add the intel yourself later, this will come out to save you I think like $300 to $500 dollars, I have not actually checked, that is a guess but it should save you atleast $300 I think.

Also yes the ssds are new so they are growing fast, just looking at the ssds out now vs the ones out in nov, there is a difference in price and speed, and for ssds that is just going to continue for the next few years.

4. win7 pro gives you xp mode, so that you can run apps that my not run in win7, in xp mode. there are some other difference, win7 will see more ram, but I advise win7 pro because of xp mode, you can check the differences here yourself
