I'm not a gamer but I thought this article from Tech Review on the impact of CPU choice on gaming performance would be on interest to those who are, especially those who are building new machines on a budget. The results reinforce the excellent advice given by many of the knowledgeable posters on this site.

a) going past 4 cores provides little for the added expense

b) E-cpu's are really only useful if more PCIe lanes are needed

c) the i5-3570K is essentially equivalent in performance to the i7-3770K while being considerably less expensive

d) the i5-3470 is cheaper still while again providing nearly equivalent performance. But remember it can't be overclocked if that's important.
