33C Idle This is the temps of my socket 478 P4 3GHz CPU, (no thermal paste) with stock cooling, according to the program "aida32" (I don't know how accurate this program is. My question is how much would a Zalman Fatal1ty FS-c77 cooler drop the temps for my CPU? The next question is how well would it cool an E8400 (stock, no OC), and how much better/worse would it cool compared to the Enzotech Extreme-X (Ultra-X, same thing I think) CPU cooler?

I don't understand your intial problem here. Is 43c at load not cool enough? Or were you interested in OC'ing soon?

Yes, 43C is cool enough, I was just wondering if I could drop the temps substantially with an after-market cooler (most after-market are better than stock, right?). I personally would like to drop the temps as low as possible, without going insane and water cooling (to old of a system anyway)
But, if getting and after-market cooler won't drop it more than 2-3C I'll forget about it.
hopefully this made sense...

If your current configuration allows it, just apply thermal paste and see what happens.

I could probably try that, I just dislike thermal paste, to me if it takes thermal paste for it to cool effectively, then you need a better cooler.
kinda twisted thinking huh?

Good luck with the cooling. Thermal interface material serves to keep air from getting between two surfaces. Air is an exceptionally good insulator, which is why they make triple pane windows. No surface is 100% smooth or level. Paste keeps air from filling all of those voids.

theres no reason at all to cool with those temps. infact, what are you using to test load? those temps dont seem high enough to me

ok well use http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
get some decent readings
test load under a significant stress test, everest/pcmark would be good for this
snap some screenies and we'll go from there
as for my question, i meant what are you using to physically stress the computer, i have never heard of aida32, if it stresses, and reads temps, then thats my bad.
to answer your other question about how significant the change will be, its completely up in the air. it can depend on as many different things you can think of: crisp installation, case design, the chips physical details, airflow to the heatsink, etc etc
*in my case, the cpu cooling was fine, but due to the case design it was starved for air, a post of mine in performance shows that simply giving it some air changed things significantly
you can expect anything from 3-10 degrees, but without more details its hard to tell
i was completely unable to find your proposed Zalman Fatal1ty FS-c77 on newegg, but id suggest the cooler i was looking into, good bang for the buck : Samurai Edited by !ender_ - 09 May 2008 at 7:03pm |

Ok. No.1 What am I using the put it under load? I'm an idiot and misread that, to stress my computer I'm using supreme commander (nothing else skyrockets my temps like that game, and I don't have anything else), and aida32 reads the temps.
No. 2 The program you gave me to test CPU temps won't work with my processor, I'm using a P4 @ 3GHz
No. 3 my case is a Thermaltake lanfire, 2 90mm and 2 80mm, one of each is intake and the other is exhaust. as for cable managment... You don't want to know
Thats all I can think of right now Edited by Weasel - 12 May 2008 at 8:23am |

Yes, the average CPU temp was 48C, ok so I was off by 5C.
after i let my comp sit for a few minute it stabilized out at roughly 31C.
I used everest ultimate for the test and temps Edited by Weasel - 12 May 2008 at 10:48am |

I would kill to have those temps. If I were you, be very happy to have what you have.

Cool, thanks for giving me reassurance that its cool enough.
I wonder him much it would drop if I managed the cables correctly, cleaned out the dust, and put thermal paste on the CPU. Think of the possibilities!
lol
If you can find me you can have those temps... lol Edited by Weasel - 12 May 2008 at 11:59am |

The lower the better if you can. There are people out there cooling at sub-zero temperatures with liquid nitrogen. I took the plastic side window off my case and run a small floor fan pointing just above the top of the case, pushing the air off the top and away from the rig. I've dropped temps by around 4 to 5 degrees C by doing that. |

I actually read your temp post incorrectly. My Quad temps hover around 39 to 40 C right now. So it looks like I'm a bit cooler than yours. Still, yours looks good. |
