Can anyone recommend a good free program? I tried HWmonitor and speedfan and neither one shows my graphics card.

Also, is your graphics driver installed? Check "Device Manager" under "Display Adapters" as well.

Yes the driver is installed. The Intel HD Graphics 4000 didnt show up until I started up a game then it stopped giving temperatures for it after it was closed and it still wont show my radeon 7970m.

Try MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision and see if it shows both.

Just read where some had to run MSI Kombuster, part of Afterburner., then go back and temps displayed. I think the K in upper left,.opposite " i" is it. Its a stress test and never tried that one so good luck.
Sounds like a work around and not a good solution that they tried. |

The problem is Enduro for yor 7970M. Set the monitors to logging and then play your games. That will force the 7970M to run. Until the hotfix comes out....you still may not see it because utilization is to low. bprat22 is right....the workaround is to use Kombustor to stress the system, then start reading the monitors.
I went through that for about 4 months......sucks

I ran MSI Kombuster for 30 minutes and the whole time it said it was using the intel HD Graphics 4000. HWMonitor said the same thing, is it possible its using the 7970m but for some reason it just says its the intel? HWMonitor says I have a i7 3820qm but I have a 3740qm.

Yeah...it's possible. That's why the hotfix is coming out. Another thing you might try is get in the Catalyst Control Panel and make sure the .exe file for your monitoring apps are set for High Performance. If you don't tell an application to specifically use the dGPU, it will run off the iGPU.
And sometimes, even if you do that....with the under utilization issue with Enduro, the temps and fans won't move much if the 7970M is only being used 15% of the time. The hot fix and AMD pushing out better drivers over time will help. With respect to the CPU.....what does dxdiag say you have? Hopefully they didn't put in the wrong processor. I have the 3820QM and HWMonitor reads it correctly.

Ya I did that in CCC but I may have missed a program I'll have to double check. Dxdiag says I have an i7 3740qm. Looks like I'll have to wait for the hotfix, do you know if theres a approximate release date?

Anandtech is testing the beta hot fix right now and reports it will be released in a week or so. Here is the info on the testing: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6353/testing-amds-hd-7970m-enduro-hotfix
That's weird that HWinfo is reading a wrong cpu. Edited by Bobby - 08 Oct 2012 at 11:32pm |

Oh sorry HWMonitor was reading the wrong cpu, I just downloaded HWinfo64 and it shows the correct CPU. Thanks for the link hopefully the hotfix comes out really soon.

ok....good. That's why I edited my post. I didn't want to suggest you grabbed the wrong version
Yeah....AMD took a lot of bad press for Enduro issues and blowing off the end-users for a while until a couple of "higher ups" in the publishing business got wind of it and started asking questions. So AMD is now being open about it and we suspect they will be pushing out several more updates after the hotfix to get it working right.

Quick question....... Does Enduro under utilizing the card drop frame rates or is it just over emphasing integrated and will use the card when needed. In other words, if one wasn't watching would they see a performance hit.
From all the controversy I think the answer is a fps hit but what have you guys seen. Thanks. |

bprat22....great question. A lot depended on the game. Some saw a performance hit and some you wouldn't notice. The Intel graphics on the 3rd gen ivy bridge chip has a lot of power and will run games so someone who didn't realize the potential power of the 7970M GPU may not realize the performance hit.
Yes, the under utilization of the dGPU will cause an FPS hit. Once more, lowering the game graphics settings wouldn't make the FPS rise. Alienware realized this and created the mux design so the user could "flip a switch" and force the dGPU to run continuously. Killed battery life but the dGPU ran full time like it does in a desktop. In my case, I had difficulty setting the AA and AF for the flight sim because the game's cfg file would only "see" the Intel GPU. The FPS kept fluctuating because I couldn't get the 7970M to run more than 12% which caused stutters as the scenery files kept trying to load on the fly. Short answer to your question, yes many (not all) games saw a performance hit because of a drop in FPS caused by Enduro switching to the iGPU (under utilization) Because of the muxless design of the Clevo platform, AMD does not expect the driver performance to ever get to 100% utilization because there is not direct connection from the video card to the display. The Intel graphics is hardwired between the two. Now....in my personal case.....the flight simulator was severely crippled. I could take great screen shots because gameplay was frozen but early videos were stuttering which isn't good when flying a jet. I swapped out the AMD 7970M for the NVidia 680M and my FPS shot through the roof and the utilization hit 80%. I was also able to get the NVidia control panel to set a profile for the .exe file so AA and AF now sticks. AMD is with Enduro today where NVidia was with Optimus over 2 years ago. The difference was that NVidia acknowledged the problem and engaged the community. AMD denied the issue till 3 months of public outcry finally brought them to where they are today. The upcoming hot fix is really a beta. I would not expect a mature driver for the 7xxx series mobile gpu's for another 6-12 months. I'm not a fanboy of either tech and am not criticizing either technology although I am criticizing AMD for trying to sweep the issue under the rug and "coerce" at least one reseller from trying to develop a fix because doind so (develop a fix) would be admitting a problem. I have run both the 7970M and the 680M in the same platform and I can tell you that the 680M switching technology (Optimus) is much more mature than Enduro today.
