I still play most games today on a single core machine that is 3.4 ghz and just over 3yrs old. If I were to buy a machine and deciding between a high end dual core cpu (E6850 3ghz)or the average quad core cpu (Q6600 2.4ghz) which one would be preferred strictly for gaming purposes? Lets say that when I am gaming I will not have any other programs running in the background (besides what is normally running). I would also like to be able to continue playing new games for the next 4years.

I don't believe that there's much difference. The E6850 is probably a marginally better choice for now. Eventually, as games get smarter about multi-threading, the Q6600 will probably be the better performer. Hard to say whether that will happen in a year, or two, or three....

The price of a  Q6600 quadcore and E6850 dual core is almost the same, i would go with the quadcore for future proofing. Today's cpu can run any games without any trouble. The bottleneck in games lies at the graphic card, you'll need a fast graphic card not a fast cpu. Many newer games already can use the extra cores. CPU speed is not what you need in games. Remember that you can OC a quadcore to 3HGz or more too.
