Are those at idle? What type of cooling system do you have? If it's air you may need to dust it out.

that's at idle, though with about 15 programs loading it
I have stock air, dusted it out about a week ago when I had to reposition the cooler (came loose). I'm assuming its gotten loose again.... |

I recommend purchasing a low cost air cooler.

I've figured it out by now. You're the guy who bought a DS computer with the stock cooler who then had the cpu overclocked.
That's like trying put out a campfire with turkey baster. I agree with what Alex said, buy yourself a good aftermarket cooler lest you accidentally fry your chip. Personally I'd suggest the coolermaster hyper 212+ as a dirt cheap cooler that offer's decent performance. Or if your want to go the full hog then I'd suggest a thermalright true 120 rev.c or venomous x. |

only thing that counts is load temps, and that is his idle, so it doesn't me squat.
load temps with i7 CPU's, keep under 85C, but with electronics, the rule of thumb is for every 10C cooler, double the life expectancy..

It stands to reason that if his idle temps are 63-70 then there's a good chance he'll go over 85 once he stresses his cpu.

well, let's test that theory...
*runs hyperpi aight, the max core one ever peaked to was 91C, all other cores were 90C and below at max temp. This was run shortly after startup, with hyperpi going 8M on 7 out of 8 threads. honestly though, that's obviously most of the cores running at 100%, I never reach that, it's usually well below 50%. whenever I run FAH too, I run on GPU, so my CPU is never really stressed, with the exception of running HyperPi now I have a decision to make, do I go with a air cooler, or, do I attempt to revive my LC design... venomous x and fans = $80
LC loop with 2 quick release pairs (necessary since I'm strapping a rad to my side fan) = $450 what do u think... also, loading the comp with a game produces at max 68 C |

got the ven x and a few cooler master r4-l2r series fans today, along with some MX-2. unfortunately, the thermal goo cleaner has yet to arrive, so im not risking anything yet...
anyways, the fans are pretty decent, a bit louder than my old fans though, despite being rated 7 dBa quieter than my old ones. http://silverstonetek.com/products/p_spec.php?pno=FN121-BL&area=usa versus http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=2915 |

ablahblah sorry I should have said something. I have those fans and they are indeed, i won't say loud, but they aren't quiet. They have a bit of a hum rather then a quiet 'whoosh' like my noctua fans (I think quality of noise tops the dba).
For the price they do seem to move a lot of air and aren't super loud or anything. Now a loud fan is the one that comes with the hyper 212+. I got it on sale for 20 dollars at microcenter for my secondary i7 rig and it is loud. However it was easily adjustable being a 4 pin fan and it got reasonable when I adjusted it. |

a little bit louder than my old fans for a tradeoff of 2x the airflow. i'd take that any day lol.
and the hum gets annoying...lol....my case sounds like a wind turbine now...then again, it is appropriate since the case was supposed to be inspired by a stealth fighter....anyways, I, unfortunately, ordered 4 of the fans, two for the cooler, two for the case....well..I'm stuck with them now, eh? xD I wonder if hooking them up to the mobo will make any sort of difference. they're rated at 2000rpm, and because of their SHORT cables one is connected to the mobo, the other to the PSU. i noticed the one connected to the mobo is reporting 1188rpm and is considerably quieter than the fan connected to the PSU...now I just need a 3-pin extension cord -_- damn 8-inch cable.Edited by ablahblah - 11 May 2010 at 5:11pm |

you can down volt them for free... 7 volts should be a lot quieter, unless you like having fans on the mobo.

on your 3 pin fan connector, I assume you are connecting it to a 4 pin molex?
the yellow on the molex is 12v, the red is 5v, hook the yellow on the molex to the red on the 3 pin, and the red on the molex to the black on 3 pin. this will give you 7 volts. or hook the molex red to the 3 pin red, and a molex black to the 3 pin black for 5 volts.
lol need pics? the molex come apart very easy, same with the 3 pin connectors

the PSU has a couple of 3-pin fan connectors already on it
the wires are all bundled up with zip ties, and I'm not taking it off till I get some more zip ties, so I can't really track whether it was built onto the PSU itself or DS supplied it. I probably could just take the 4-pin adapter supplied with the fans and just do that to it though. Then again, it is a passthrough cable, would that screw up anything else connected to it... as long as the two wires off the molex are not touching each other, then yes that is a 7v set up |

used electrical tape over the pins to isolate them. first put a little bit of tissue paper over it though, since from experience I know that electrical tape tends to leave residue on occasion...
anyways, it runs pretty dang quiet at 7v, still moves a lot of air, ty man! still waiting on articlean though |

now you just need some small tools, soldering iron, dremel, jig saw, and you can really do some modding.

small tools - check
dremel - waiting on it soldering iron - waiting on it jig saw - waiting on it you know, if I really got desperate, I could bring some stuff to mod to my school robotic's team lol. we have a mini-CNC machine, jigsaw, a dremel, host of bits, 2 soldering irons, multimeters, and the guy who's in charge of the team is pretty computer-savvy. forgot what his overclock was, but you get the point when I say overclock. venomous x with one fan, on 70lbs rating, I think, really dunno. I can still turn up the load screw more to apply more pressure, but I dunno if that's what I should do or not. btw, that temp is with an overclock to 3.33Ghz done by DS, originally with a stock cooler. right now, after being idle for a few hours, it runs at ~45C on all cores.
i could slap on the second fan that I bought, but that would involve moving my side panel fan to an exterior mount. dunno if that's worth it though. |

mobo f*cked up. big time. CPU somehow running ~55C, GPU's somehow unresponsive to automatic fan control commands, temperature probes going insane. -_- i, hate, XFX now
temps maxing out at 83 C, how the hell is that possible...30C differential... I'm looking at that screenshot I took before, and comparing it to this...and its not making ANY sense... ![]() Edited by ablahblah - 15 May 2010 at 7:38pm |

...alright...now im just completely speechless...
I took the CPU out of its socket to reapply some MX-2, attached the CPU correctly, seated it correctly, put it in, felt more resistance than usual. I took the CPU out, checked the socket, and it looked fine. Tried it again, locked it this time, and secured the heatsink. Booting up gave a d4 error. I though, HOLY ****. Took the heatsink off, took the CPU out, found a few bent pins. Panicked for a few minutes, somehow bent the pins back, attached everything, and rebooted. Still d4. Looked online, saw a lot of RAM problems, took out everything but 1 RAM stick. Booted up. Hallelujah. Now guess what? CPU TEMP at IDLE - ~50C..with the OC...What the hell just happened?! (Btw, now I'm stuck with one 2GB stick of RAM, and I can't do anything about it. Others have had this problem too. Sigh...RMA time I hope...) and now, I'm also scared whether I screwed my 920. It works, yes, however, the board now shows that setting 1.5v for the CPU is now in the Red "Risk" zone Edited by ablahblah - 16 May 2010 at 2:28pm |
