    Posted: 01 Dec 2008 at 3:00pm

Hello all!

I am curious to know if it is possible for me to upgrade my CPU.

I currently have Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 on an eVGA Core 23 Quad (Chipset:  nForce 680i).

Looking at options to keep my machine..."modernized."

Thanks!

680i does not support yorkfields (Q8200, Q9300, Q9450, Q9550, Q9650, QX9650, QX9770, and whatever Q9/8 i forgot to mention).

You can upgrade to either the newer wolfdales (duo core - E7200, E7300, E8200, E8300, E8400, E8500, E8600, and whatever duo I forgot to mention that is above E6) or older kentsfield (quad core - Q6600, Q6700, QX6850, and you get the point).

Hey, thanks for the replies fellas.

I'm pretty much a novice with these things.  Is the swap pretty easy?  Do i need to apply any of that heat putty stuff or anything or just release the anchor, swap, and re-lock it?

Thanks,

Man, in comparison, limiting to only what 680i can support, it seems like an upgrade won't make that much of a dramatic difference.

How are the E6700 holding up to today's caliber out there?

Thanks for all of the answers!

I'm still using an E6750. Unless money isn't a issue, you shouldn't be upgrading to a newer duo. If you absolutely need a quad than get a Q6600, it still holds the best value of any CPU.

CPU comes with Intel's stock heatsink (unless you buy them OEM) which includes a thermal pad.

now I have a dumb question... if I wanted to update my CPU (remove it and replace with a new one) will that totally screw everything up on my computer?  I mean will it delete stuff? Like hard drives, and OS?

hi guys,

Well...i went out to Fry's and got an Intel E8500 3.16ghz to settle into my machine.  I swapped out the CPUs and replaced the fan.

When i turn my computer on, there is nothing on the display at all.  Any ideas....? lol

Thanks!

You need to update your 680i to the latest bios in order for it to recognize the E8500.

That would mean that you have a power cable not connected ( probably the one next to the CPU)

Or that you forgot to switch the power switch next to the rear plug back on

No, I did not remove the motherboard.  the big ass fan has those tool-less plastic crimps that can just be yanked out.

Additional Note:    I was able to go into setup and see that the CPU temp rose from 94-100 C and then shut down at 100.  Is this the reason why it's doing it?  how do it make it stop?  The fan is plugged in and on.  Very strange...
