Well my rig isn't probably the best for comparing different RAM speeds like what was debated in the "Crazy Question?" thread because I have a crappy 9600GT, though the results are still interesting.
And here we go! CPU & RAM Info Everest Cache & Memory Benchmark Street Fighter IV Benchmark (1024x768) Street Fighter IV Benchmark (1280x1024) Edited by venom - 21 Jun 2009 at 7:14am |

Thanks for the test Venom!!!! You rock.
I do not think anyone is arguing that there is much difference in memory speed these days. I was wondering if the CPU itself could be overclocked higher with faster RAM. I did not want to limit my options with 1333 RAM if it presented a CPU overclock issue. I have learned that it really does not limit a CPU overclock until you get well over 4Ghz, as long as you underclock the RAM. Correct?

I thought someone said something about memory, or maybe I did, can't remember now.
Well it isn't about limiting the CPU overclock, but the ram speed is linked and thus will be affected. You could always overclock the RAM as well, from say 1333 to 1600 using a 200 bclock, but that is usually a much harder route. Let me know if you have more questions. |

based on that, would I be correct to say that no matter what ram I go with, when choosing stage 1 OC I'm not going to get a higher OC then 3.8GHz? (not counting 3.9GHz since they are practically the same.)?

Based on anything you are not going to get an OC of over 3.9 if you choose stage 1. Unless you do it yourself once you get the system.

If you let them know for 1333 ram that you are ok with it being downclocked then yes. Or you can order overclocking of the ram as well. Edited by venom - 21 Jun 2009 at 3:00pm |

That street fighter IV is a funny little benchmark. On the highest resolution i can go, 1920x1200. I get over 400fps average.. @ 4.7Ghz on the CPU. I tried different ram speed, 1300 mhz-2150Mhz made very little difference in this game. Edited by justin.kerr - 21 Jun 2009 at 7:10pm |

Damn I need a new video card. What would you recommend, 2 x 4890 or GTX295?

After owning many of the GTX 200 series cards, I am most impressed with a pair of these. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102840
Mine will both run 1020Mhz on the chip, 4400 Mhz on the ram. They make very little noise and run cool. Also they can very easily be volt modded unlike 285's or 275's, since Nvidia cheaped out on the vrm..
Image quality seems a lot better, textures look sharper. 3
I have heard that the reference 4890 cards runs hot and are loud though. lol

I wanted to get one of those myself. Actually, i wanted the atomic edition, but nobody knows when they'll be back :( i miss my old 9800 pro and how awesome it used to be. be nice to go back to an ATI for the right price. but of course, i'd need a new computer before i get one of those anyway, so i guess i'm just dreaming :) |

The card is sweet, but how good is Crossfire on X58 boards? I have not read much about SLI vs Crossfire.

Crossfire on X58 is fine. How well it scales is up the the individual game though. lol
Some games scale better with sli some with crossfire.

So what would you recommend justin, one, or two 4890s like the one you posted for newegg or a GTX295?

My resolution currently is 1680x1050, might be 1920x1200 in the future.
I would rather go the 295 since its a single card, costs damn near the same as 2x275, and i have a small case. Mentioning the ATI card was just for an opinion. I play Crysis (barely), CoD4&5, UT99, GuildWars, & MotoGP09, Fallout 3, Splinter Cell, but would like to play UT3/2004, Gears of War, Mass Effect 1/2, Splinter Cell Conviction, CoD: MW2, Mirrors Edge, the list goes on lol. |

well for 1600 x 1200 all you need is one 275, but 2 x 275 will cost less but give you better performance then a 295, however I can understand you wanting one card.
for all of the games you mentioned a 275 beat a regular 4890. newegg has an EVGA 275 for $229 after mail in rebate. an EVGA 295 is going for $529 the rest is up to you Edited by DST4ME - 23 Jun 2009 at 3:44am |

I can get a 295 much cheaper than that. ;)
So a 4890 is out of the question since it is crappier than a 275. Thanks for the suggestions/info. Edited by venom - 23 Jun 2009 at 4:00am |
