They are both technologies. There is no such thing as a CRT LCD monitor.

hmmm
CRT: Cathode Ray Tube
LCD: Liquid Crystal Display
The two things are not something for which you will find a hybrid version combining both. CRTs can be made to be more flat or even almost completely flat at the expense of adding a tremendous amount of weight. (This has to do with containing a vacuum in a structurally weaker shape).
It's been a long time since basic electronics, but the gist is, the LCD uses current to align a layer of crystal that serves to allow more or less light to pass. The color LCD's of today use a different type of matrix than the old black and white LCD's I used to work with, but the concept remains.
CRTs use a beam of electrons fired through a magnetic field at a phosphor layer to achieve a picture. The CRT's beam traces the image in a series of scan lines as it sweeps across the screen at your refresh rate.
Now...
The days of the CRT being "better" are probably over. When the LCDs first came out, they had really bad ghosting problems. They simply could not update the information on screen fast enough to be any good for gaming more intense than Minesweeper. I will not pretend to understand all of the advances in technology that have lead to this. The only important thing here, is that LCD's now rival the best CRT's for image quality. The viewing angle on a CRT is still better. Other than that, the CRT is cheaper, not really any better at this point, if we are talking about two quality displays.
Hell, that last sentence may not even be true for much longer. Personally, I would just get a nice, light LCD and leave the CRT's to museums and Oscopes (assuming *those* haven't gone LCD while I wasn't looking

Man! This is one of those topics that just have a wealth of great information to read up on before buying. Tyler is right, the way of the CRT is one of the museum and LCD/DLP/Plasma have taken the market now with extremely refined technology.
With aspect ratios of 16:9, resolutions of 1,920 x 1,080 and contrast ratios of 10,000:1, there are so many choices of fantastic equipment to pick from in the market today. Then you have HDMI, Blue Ray HD/DVD and HD/DVD out there to progressively enhance the viewing experience and take you to even greater levels of visual immersion. There are points of diminishing return where the eye will only pick-up contrast ratios up to a certain level. Beyond that, it is moot and you won't see a difference. So you wouldn't want to purchase something that doesn't add value for the dollar to a practical application. The choices definitely warrant a thorough process of research and evaluation before you make your choice. You can ask 8 people what there preferrence is when it comes to these kinds of things, and you will probably get 6 different reasons why they purchase the way the do. This is very subjective marketing and purchasing. You have to go and shop and see the equipment perform, and then make an informed opinion of your own as to why you will purchase what you do. Get on the internet and Goggle HDMI, 1080I and 1080P and read what the differences are. Google CRT vs. DLP, Plasma and LCD, and read what the variances are between the lot. Then there is always price to consider. You'll need to make an informed decision upon what suits your needs, or wants, because this is a market that addresses not only a need to equip a home with media based entertainment, but it also appeals and caters to our egos and vanity. So, you will purchase based on needs and/or wants. I purchase on needs first, then decide in the stores that I need/want to go bigger, faster and prettier. Here is my bottom line recommendation... READ, READ, READ. |

CRTs are being phased out...try finding one on Newegg. ;)
I bought one for my last computer, a Viewsonic G90f. True flat screen. Outstanding monitor. Still works great. Weighs about 50lbs :) As mentioned above, LCD technology has just plain caught up with CRTs as far as response times and color reproduction. That being the case, the market is basically driving the CRTs out and pulling LCDs in. There's really not much of a choice in the matter now a days. If you want a CRT, you'll have to search hard to find a decent one. And the price comparisons don't justify a CRT any more.
