Hello,

As a novice in general computer knowledge, I was hoping a couple knowledgeable people might look over my build for me.

I was hoping to spend closer to $1500 but I do know that you have to spend money for quality so I am not too concerned about an additional $200. I pretty much play mmoprgs/starcraft II and want a machine that can handle itself several years from now.

Also from reading around recently I am curious about usb3.0 and current build work with/around it. And I was also curious about SSD drives in general and whether or not TRIM is necessary and if I had it with my build. (sorry if these are dumb questions that could be answered by a little more research, but I would like to make a computer purchase while companies are in the back to school mode).

Thanks!

USB 3.0 is basically a much faster usb port. But its only faster if you are using a device that supports usb 3.0 if you want your build to last a while you should get a $25 usb 3.0 add on card under the gfx card box.
SSD's are basically a speed boost on every time a game loads a level or saves data. Any time the disk is written data to or read data its faster. Many people on this forum would recommended it.
If you want the best gaming performance i would reccomend upgrading to the gtx 480 before adding a ssd. So if its not in your budget you should get rid of your ssd and add the gtx 480. its better and faster then the gtx 470 and its newer, better and will last longer...
You are doing the overclock so you should probably get a cooling upgrade. You should get the noctua dual 120mm fans.
Other then that it looks good to me.
Edit: fixed gfx card number (nice catch Dragoonseal )

What is your monitor's max resolution?

If you're thinking of picking up such a motherboard for the USB 3.0 you can just select the EVGA USB 3.0 PCIe card from the Add-on Card menu instead for much cheaper, just $25. If you're picking it for the SATA III 6Gb/s, don't.

SSDs are great but may not be in your budget, better to make sure you get a sufficiently powerful GPU first. Some SSDs will retain performance well without TRIM functionality (Intel drives), some will not in the least. You definitely want TRIM functionality when possible, don't use Marvell or JMicron controllers.

You really need to add a CPU cooler so you can get a nice overclock. I recommend the Stage 1 Noctua.

EDIT: maxyme means the GTX 480 and GTX 470 respectively. Hahaha

well you really need to add a cooler even if you dont overclock, but either way, look no further than the noctua u12p, check the link in my signature for more info

Max resolution is 1680 x 1050 on my HP w2207

Took your suggestions and at the moment swapped out the SSD for an even smaller 500gb HDD. I figure I can get an external (for mobility) when I need to upgrade and I assume anything has to load faster than my current computer so SSD would be a nice upgrade at some point but I can live without for now.

Also added the additional cooling.

Thank you for your suggestions they were very appreciated.

ticket number: 434338
$1738

this is a i7 build, it runs off the older p55 platform and is still a quad core, how ever if you can scratch up the $60 difference your current build would be a little better for long run. the difference between his build and mine is a x58 chipset and 2gb of ram.

at your resolution all you will need is a 470 to play very high on most games. having a 480 will keep you a ahead of the curve for a little longer. there is a $250 on the p55 build for the the 480 while the x58 build is only a 170 difference. either cpu choice i7 860 or i7 930 will out last a few gpu swaps before you need to buy a new computer.
