    Posted: 17 Oct 2009 at 1:27pm
Hey guys,

I just recently bought a new sony 40" xbr9 lcd hdtv and I want to hook my surround sound system up to it.  I have both my tv and my DS in the same room.  Now the issue is that I already have speakers set up for my DS, but the tv and computer are along different walls.  I don't want 16 speakers floating around the room, so if I hook both my tv and DS into the surround sound, one of them will have the sound oriented incorrectly.  Does anybody know if there is a way to customize which speakers my computer considers to be the front left, center, front right, and rears?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks all,
pad0

Note: I realize I could just use the tv as my monitor, but I don't want to give up my 1920X1200 res.

lol, nice pic.  Currently I'm only running a left and right out of the computer through an M-audio fast track pro (i dabble in music production), but if I were to hook up to the receiver I would probably just be using my integrated sound on the EVGA X58 3X SLI.  I don't think the M-audio card does surround sound.  The 16 speaker estimate was an exaggeration.  I guess there would only actually be 8 speakers total, but I'm already taking up all the space in what was supposed to be a "study room," lol.

Thats a good question.  I'm trying to figure out what model I have.  Unfortunately its in storage right now, so I can't just look at it.  I have an Onkyo system.  I'm not sure off hand if it has multi-room support or not.

This is the one I have: http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=HT-SR750&class=Systems&p=i

Looks like a no on the multi-room support.

"do you have a sound card, if so which one?"

Just out of curiosity, if I did have a better sound card, would this make a difference?  If so, I would be willing to invest in one.

So I've been looking into getting a nicer sound card because some of the better ones come with special software, which I would hope would be customizable the way I need.  Does anybody have a Creative x-fi titanium?  There is a screen shot on their website of the bundled software and I find it intriguing.

Here's the pic: http://images.americas.creative.com/images/products/inline/titfatchamp/GameMode.jpg

It looks like this software gives you a lot of options.  I was hoping I could download the software and just look through it, but unfortunately I haven't found a way to do that.  Does anybody have this and know if you can customize which speakers each channel will play through?

My only other option would be to find some sort of wire that has all of the connections on the PC end that would then converge into 1 digital wire that I could plug into the receiver.  I could just plug them in the way I need and sort of fool it into thinking its playing through the correct ones.  Does anything like this exist?

Thanks,
pad0

yes, a spdif will connect a sound card to your reciever if both have spdif connections.
