When are you expecting the PC? What resolution monitor is he using? If you need this by say Christmas or even end of year - you're only real option will go be to go with a pre-build. Otherwise - if waiting 4-7 weeks is OK we can put together a very good configuration with more specific specs.

Waiting for the computer to get to us before Feb is fine. Monitor maybe something like a 1440, unless you can recommend something else.

Here's a config that will crush most things that you throw at it, no matter the resolution. $2,583.00 after discount.

Thanks for the config. I was looking at the AMD 3900XT for $48 more, isn't it worth it?

That is a very strong build from grasoline. It would be my choice for 1440p.
The 3900XT won't contribute anything extra for gaming. I don't know if you would ever tell the difference for any tasks you could bring to it. I think it would be a waste. In fact, for gaming the 3900X will not out-perform the 3800X. The extra cores don't come into play at all. You could save $139 there and never look back. Believe it or don't, the Ryzen 5 5600X with 6 cores is a smidgen better than the 3900 X for gaming if you wanted to wait for it into January. (Newer tech, we're talking ~5%) That could save even more at $232 less. It is quite likely a 3900x/3800X build would get to you quicker though. |

This might sound like a stupid question, but will this system work through wifi? Don't know what they will have in school. WIll wait for answer before ordering. Thanks for all you input. I will probably need some help on a monitor also. I think a 1080 will work for now. Thanks again

Not a stupid question as some motherboards do not have wifi built in. This one does :)
I haven't personally used this but I've heard great things about this Gigabyte: https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Monitor-Response-FreeSync-G27F-SA/dp/B08CMMMYXB?tag=georiot-us-default-20&ascsubtag=tomshardware-us-1125347620598111900-20 I'll let some other 1080p users weigh in - as I mainly only use 1440p. |

I think i would avoid a Freesync-only monitor for now, especially with an Nvidia 3070. Nvidia has altered their G-Sync proprietary chips to allow for many more Freesync monitors to work with G-Sync, but the only ones you can rely on are "G-Sync Compatible." If you buy G-Sync only, or Freesync only, you run the risk of not being free to switch GPU companies in the future. G-Sync COMPATIBLE is a switch-hitter.
Another poster recently offered this suggestion for about the same price. It impressed me because of the discount, and LG makes its own panels. https://www.amazon.com/LG-27GL650F-B-Ultragear-Compatible-Monitor/dp/B07R7636MH/ref=pd_di_sccai_6/140-9376304-8632662? |

If you have an Nvidia 3000 series GPU, you have abundant power for multiple monitors. The video card should have several ports, all the latest tech. I think the RTX 3070 has 1 HDMI 2.1, and 3 DisplayPort 1.4a ports. Any one should drive any monitor equipped with either kind of port. If you do not have the 2nd monitor yet, it will almost certainly come with its own cable, and either kind will do fine. If you have a second monitor, but no cable for it, you will want to be sure it has an HDMI port and/or a DisplayPort and purchase a cable for it.
Congrats! It's been a long wait, but I think you'll come to appreciate it for a very lpong time! |
